Modesto Nuts News Release
VISALIA, CA (April 30th, 2013) -- Offensive woes continued for the Nuts as they finished the month of April with a 3-1 loss to Visalia on Tuesday night at Recreation Park.
Modesto totaled a 9-16 mark in the first month of the season, finishing on a six-game losing streak, mainly due to continued offensive problems. The Nuts scored a league-low 81 runs through the first 25 games of the season. With 15 strikeouts in Tuesday's game, Modesto now has a pro-baseball leading 287 strikeouts for the year.
Nuts starter Tyler Gagnon (1-2) took the loss, but posted a strong effort in the defeat. The righty allowed just three earned runs across 5 2/3 innings. Visalia took advantage of an early defensive miscue as Gagnon induced a grounder with runners at the corners in the second, but a bobble at short by Niko Gallego resulted in the Nuts only getting one out, while also allowing the first Rawhide run to cross home. The next batter, Chris Ellison, singled through the right side of the infield to make it 2-0 Visalia.
Modesto managed only three scattered hits against Rawhide starter Andrew Barbosa (3-1), who worked six shutout innings for the win. The Nuts picked up their only run in the contest in the eighth as Tyler Massey reached on a bunt single, and Taylor Featherston followed with an RBI double against reliever Kaleb Fleck to get Modesto on the board.
Other than the pair of hits allowed by Fleck, the Rawhide bullpen was stout, striking out the final seven batters of the game, with Jake Barrett striking out the side in the ninth to nail down his seventh save in as many opportunities.
Massey, who was one of the bright spots for Modesto offensively in the first month, extended his team-best hitting streak to 12 games with his single tonight.
The Nuts will have a quick turnaround as they try to start May on the right footing with a 1 p.m. first pitch set from Recreation Park on Wednesday. LHP Tyler Anderson (0-1, 2.93) will make his sixth start of the season for the Nuts, opposite LHP Andrew Chafin (3-1, 4.50) for the Rawhide.
