Sand Gnats Cruise to 9-1 Win over Shorebirds

Savannah, GA - The Delmarva Shorebirds (11-8) did not score until the eighth inning as the Savannah Sand Gnats (10-8) cruised to a 9-1 victory on Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Sand Gnats had six two out RBIs in the game.

The Sand Gnats used two doubles to build a lead in the first inning. Chad Zurcher drew a lead off walk and scored on a double to left-center field by Jayce Boyd. Two batters later, Greg Pron doubled to deep left-center field to stretch the lead to 2-0.

The Sand Gnats recorded three hits with two outs to extend the lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Cole Frenzel hit a two out single. After a walk to Stefan Sabol, Phillip Evans hit a two-run double down the right field line to increase the lead to 4-0. Eudy Pina followed with an RBI single to left field to give the Sand Gnats a 5-0 lead.

Shorebirds starter Parker Bridwell lasted four innings. He surrendered five hits and five runs. Bridwell fanned six and walked two.

Savannah added one in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning against reliever Juan Guzman. In the sixth, five straight batters reached with two outs including back-to-back RBI singles by Boyd and Plawecki.

Savannah starter Luis Cessa earned the win over six shutout innings. He allowed five hits. Cessa struck out seven and did not issue a walk.

The Shorebirds got on the board in the eighth inning. Wynston Sawyer singled to left field to open the inning. Joel Hutter doubled down the right field line later in the inning to advance Sawyer to third. Then, Walker delivered a single to right field to get the Shorebirds on the board.

Tommy Winegardner allowed just one hit over 2.1 innings pitched in replace of Guzman.

The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats continue the series on Wednesday. April 24 at 7:05pm.
