Oshawa Generals News Release

Ottawa, Ontario - A shootout was needed to decide the final between the Oshawa Generals and Ottawa 67's, but it was the Generals coming out on top with a 6-5 win. The 7,709 in attendance at Scotiabank Place were treated to a great back and forth game, that saw the 67's third period comeback ultimately fall short. Lucas Lessio scored an impressive highlight reel goal to notch his 16th of the season, while Ken Appleby made 19 saves in the victory.

A quick start by the Generals had them up by one quickly, as a slick move by Justice Dundas steered the puck through the legs of Ottawa netminder Jacob Blair for a 1-0 lead at the 5:26 mark of the first period. A powerplay goal from the 67's a minute later tied the game at 1-1.

The Generals would get it back, as Lucas Lessio gave the Generals a 2-1 lead off a stunning goal. Lessio poked the puck past a falling defender, using his speed to close the distance between him and the goal. A quick inside-outside move made the defender miss his check leaving Lessio all alone on the breakaway. Faking right, the netminder bit on the deke, giving Lessio plenty of time to bring the puck to his left side and into the open net for his 16th of the season.

The second period saw the 67's tie the score 2-2, before the Generals responded with 3 goals in under two minutes to lead 5-2 into the third. Scott Sabourin put the Generals back into the lead at 17:01, driving to the net and deking forehand-backhand before roofing the puck over the shoulder of Blair for his 30th of the year. Adam Lloyd added his second of the season and Michael Dal Colle scored his 15th of the season to give the Generals the 5-2 lead heading into the third period.

An explosive start for the 67's started the third period in their favour, as Taylor Davis found an opening on Ken Appleby, cutting the score to 5-3. Goals by Connor Brown and Ryan Van Stralen tied the game 5-5, sending the game to overtime, and eventually a shootout.

Brian Hughes and Lucas Lessio scored for the Generals, and Appleby made the stop on both Ottawa shooters, ensuring the Generals 6-5 victory.

The Generals outshot Ottawa 35-24.

Scott Sabourin and Lucas Lessio earned first and third star selections.

The Generals return home to the General Motors Centre on March 17th, as they host the Sudbury Wolves for the final regular season game of the season. Puck drop is at 6:05pm. With the Niagara Ice Dogs losing to the Sudbury Wolves, the Generals first round matchup has been determined: Oshawa vs. Niagara!
