Saginaw Spirit News Release
In continuation of their final weekend of regular season play, the Spirit hosted the Kitchener Rangers on Friday night in Saginaw at The Dow Event Center in front of a sell-out crowd.
The first twenty minutes of the game involved six goals and no shortage of action. Kitchener winger Josh Leivo flipped the puck top shelf for what would be his first goal on the night, assisted by Tobias Rieder. Shortly after, Curtis Meighan handed the Rangers their 2-0 goal when he ripped a tough wrist shot off assists from Eric Ming and Evan McEneny. Furthering the gap between scores, Derek Schoenmakers gave Kitchener another tally assisted by Evan McEneny and Ryan Murphy. Toronto Maple Leaves draft pick Josh Leivo then followed up with his second goal of the game with help from Ben Thomson and Ryan Murphy. To get his squad on the board, Jimmy Lodge came flying in and netted a rebounded puck. Nick Moutrey and Jake Ringuette assisted his 28th goal this season. To close the door on first period scoring, Matt Puempel gave Kitchener a 6-1 lead while on a power play with assists off the sticks of Tobias Rieder and Radek Faksa.
The second period was the polar opposite of the first period, containing no goals for either team. Saginaw had seventeen shots in the period and goalie Nikita Serebryakov recorded eight saves.
In the final twenty minutes of the game, Kitchener wing Matt Puempel converted the only two goals of the period, giving him a hat trick on the night. Josh Leivo assisted the first goal and the second had an assist from Frank Corrado. The Rangers would take the win 7-1.
