Shootout Dooms Nailers, 2-1

March 6, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- On Wednesday night, the Wheeling Nailers welcomed the Elmira Jackals to WesBanco Arena, and ended up extending their point streak to four games. Unfortunately, the Jackals escaped with the extra point, as Elmira's Matt Carter was the only player to score in the shootout, giving the visitors a 2-1 win.

The Nailers opened the scoring at the 8:26 mark of the first period. Max MacKay picked off the puck in center ice, then skated in on the right side, before dishing a pass to Chris Barton in the slot. Barton took the time to line up his shot, before snapping it in on the left side of the goal. Barton's 17th of the year gave the home team a 1-0 lead, despite trailing in shots, 13-6.

Elmira evened the score in the second period, thanks to a bit of a lucky bounce. Cameron Cooper sent the puck into the slot, where Kevin Harvey managed to redirect it into the back of the net. Wheeling pleaded for the goal to be called off for a kicking motion by Harvey, but the tally stood.

The third period featured a four-minute penalty kill for the Nailers, in which they rejected all of the Jackals' chances. Wheeling was 4-for-4 while playing shorthanded, and is now knocking on the door of 86%, which is ranked third in the ECHL.

With the game knotted at three, the final period of regulation, as well as overtime were unable to settle anything, so a shootout was necessary.

In the shootout, the Nailers failed to light the lamp on their five chances, while Matt Carter roofed his opportunity in the third round for Elmira, counting for the 2-1 win.

Maxime Clermont made 14 saves on 15 shots in the win for the Jackals. Peter Delmas played extremely well, but took the shootout loss, despite a 37-save effort on 38 shots.

The Nailers will visit the Trenton Titans on Friday night at 7:05, in the first of three straight road games against Atlantic Division opponents.
