Tonight's Matchup: The San Francisco Bulls (21-31-1-6) return home from their six-game road trip to take on the conference leading Alaska Aces (43-12-2-4) on Wednesday night. The Bulls play 10 of their final 13 games on home ice. Tonight begins a three-game set between the two teams, marking the final time they will face-off in the regular season. This is the seventh of nine matchups, with the Bulls behind in the season series 2-4-0-0. In their previous meeting, a three-game set in Anchorage, San Francisco stunned the Aces by taking two of three. The Bulls took the first game 5-2, dropped the second 2-1, but finished strong in the third with an overtime winner from Peter Sivak to win 3-2.
San Francisco announced on Tuesday afternoon a massive seven-player trade that sent Jordan Clendenning, Sebastian Trudeau, Jonathan Lessard, and Cody Carlson to the Utah Grizzlies. In exchange, the Bulls acquired forwards Kory Falite and Ian Schultz, and defenseman Mark Isherwood. Falite, 26, ranks third among active skaters on Utah with 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 59 games. Schultz, 23, has recorded 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) and 139 penalty minutes in 27 games with Utah this season. Schultz is expected to add a physical presence to San Francisco's checking line that they lost with Kris Belan's promotion to the AHL. Isherwood, 24, ranks first among Utah defensemen with 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) in 37 games. The three new acquisitions, along with the newcomers from late February, Tristan King, Bryan Cameron and Yanni Gourde are all expected to make their home debuts tonight at the Cow Palace.
The Bulls were able to grab two of six wins from their six-game road trip. Both wins came in a shootout, against the Idaho Steelheads and Colorado Eagles. The final two games of the trip, San Francisco traveled to Las Vegas to face the Wranglers. Las Vegas took the first game 2-1 and the second 6-2. On a high note, during the six-game stint, the Bulls received five goals from their recently acquired newcomers. Bryan Cameron and Tristan King both scored twice and Yanni Gourde scored once. Bulls defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin scored his first goal in a San Francisco uniform during the second game against Idaho. Danis-Pepin kept the offensive push coming, scoring twice more during the remainder of the trip.
Tonight the Bulls host their inaugural hot dog eating contest! Competitive eating celebrity Joey "Jaws" Chestnut will judge the competition during the first intermission. Chestnut is a six-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion.
Alaska has had a firm hold on first place for the majority of the 2012-2013 season. Six points ahead of the Ontario Reign, the Aces look to secure the number one seed in the playoffs. San Francisco continues their playoff push, currently in eighth place with 49 points. The Bulls are five points behind the Utah Grizzlies and eight points ahead of the last place Bakersfield Condors.
The Bulls and Aces face off two more times this weekend. They will host Eco-Friendly weekend on March 8 and 9. On Friday, March 8, the first 1,000 fans, 13 and over, receive a reusable grocery bag. The following night on Saturday, the first 500 fans, 13 and over, receive an SF Bulls travel cup. Both games begin at 7:15 pm, doors open at 6 pm.
