Wheeling Nailers News Release
Monday night in Wheeling, the Nailers took on the Elmira Jackals for the sixth time this season, and third time in two weeks. Unlike the previous three meetings, this time, the Jackals got the upper hand. Jack Downing netted a pair of goals, and Maxime Clermont made 43 saves, as the visitors came away with the 3-2 win.
The Jackals started off the scoring at 9:35 of the first. Louie Caporusso curled around the back of the net, before putting a shot on goal. Peter Delmas made the save, but Jack Downing was on the door step to put in the rebound. Luke Pither answered with a beautiful top shelf goal 1:53 later, finishing off a one-time pass through the slot from Carl Sneep. Chris Higgins also grabbed an assist, as the game was knotted at one after the first.
The Nailers gained their first lead of the game 6:32 of the second period, while playing on the man advantage. Paul Crowder jammed a shot in front of the net, before the puck eventually popped free to Andrew Hotham, who batted a shot into the back of the cage. Jordan Pietrus scored the equalizer 1:46 later, as he took a drop pass from Kevin Harvey, and scored from the right circle.
Later in the middle frame, the Jackals regained the lead, courtesy of a power play goal. Dustin Gazley slipped a pass through the slot to Jack Downing, who slammed in a shot from the left side of the crease.
In the third period, the Nailers had a lot of great chances but they couldn't capitalize, as Elmira hung on for the 3-2 win.
Maxime Clermont was brilliant in goal for the Jackals, stopping 43 of the 45 shots he faced in the win. Peter Delmas took the loss for Wheeling, despite making 34 saves on 37 shots.
