Game Rewind

Friday, December 28th Vs Fort Wayne Komets (Fort Wayne 4-Kalamazoo 1)

Kalamazoo, MI- The Fort Wayne Komets (15-13-1-1) special teams paved the way with a power-play and a shorthand tally in a 4-1 victory Friday night over the Kalamazoo Wings (11-15-2-1) at Wings Stadium.

Skating below the left circle, Thomas Beauregard snuck the puck on Fort Wayne's second shot of game past the Joel Martin 12:41 into the opening period for his team-leading 13th goal of the season to give the Komets an early 1-0 lead.

Too aggressive on their power-play early in the second period, a cross rink pass by Kalamazoo turned into an odd-man rush and a shorthanded tally by Brent Smith (6th).

The Komets extended their lead to 3-0 with 4:17 remaining in the second frame, when Brandon Marino picked up his second assist of the game by creating a turnover in the K-Wings zone and sending it to Eric Giosa for the forward's fifth-goal of the season.

Kalamazoo's lone goal occurred midway in the third, as Mike Matczak (1st) struck with a power-play marker.

Giosa tacked on his second-tally of the night in the waning moments with an empty-netter to close out the scoring.

Saturday, December 29th @ Toledo Walleye (Kalamazoo 4-Toledo 3-Shootout)

Toledo, OH - Earning their first win in five games (0-4-1-0), the Kalamazoo Wings (12-15-2-1) fought off a late charge from the Toledo Walleye (17-13-0-2) in a 4-3 shootout victory Saturday night at the Huntington Center.

Not wasting any time, the Walleye became the quickest K-Wings opponent this season to score against Kalamazoo. Battling in front of the net, Todd Broadhurst (9th) struck with a backhander 1:37 into the game to give Toledo the early advantage.

Sparked by a fight early in the second period by newly acquired forward Tyler Shelast, who was making his K-Wings debut, Kalamazoo responded with a equalizer from Alexandre Mallet (2nd) off the ensuing face-off 5:10 into the period.

Broadhurst (10th) reclaimed the lead for the Walleye scoring his second of the night on a power-play goal midway in the period.

Responding 39 seconds later, Kory Karlander (7th) evened the game at 2-2 with wrister from the slot 12:01 into the stanza. Assisting on the goal was Aaron Clarke, who extended his point streak to four games with the helper.

Building off of the momentum of the tally, Kalamazoo captured the lead 55 seconds later with a one-timer from Elgin Reid (5th).

Forcing overtime midway in the third, Brett Raedeke notched his first goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3.

The stingiest shootout team in the league prevailed in the extra session outdueling Toledo 2-0 with goals from Nick Sirota and Karlander. In four shootout affairs this season, Kalamazoo has only surrendered two goals in 19 attempts this season.
