Trenton Thunder News Release

(Binghamton, NY) - Craig Heyer tossed five solid innings to win for the first time since early May as the Trenton Thunder beat the Binghamton Mets, 3-2, Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium in a game that finished about 40 minutes after a Reading loss allowed the squad to clinch the Eastern Division title. Adonis Garcia went 4-for-4 to pace a 12-hit attack for the Thunder (78-62), who cinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs when Reading fell at Portland, 6-1 earlier in the night.

Trenton will host game three of the Divisional Playoff Series next Friday night (Sept. 7) at Waterfront Park, then games four and five if necessary on Saturday and Sunday. Reading holds a slim one-game lead over New Britain for the wild card spot with two games to play in the regular season.

Heyer (3-5) allowed one run on six hits while striking out four in his five frames. Lee Hyde and Mark Montgomery combined for three perfect innings in relief and set the stage for Ryan Pope in the ninth inning, who allowed a run but recorded his eighth save of the season.

The Thunder scored all of their runs in the first two innings against Binghamton starter Mark Cohoon (8-11). David Adams sacrifice fly and Addison Maruszak's RBI single made it 2-0 in the first, then Garcia struck for a two-out RBI double in the second inning.

Dustin Martin homered and went 2-for-3 for the Mets, while Garcia had three doubles and an RBI for Trenton. Cohoon allowed three runs on ten hits in seven innings of work.

Trenton and Binghamton continue the series Sunday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm. Left-hander Vidal Nuno (9-5, 2.39) is expected to start for the Thunder while the Mets counter with righty Cory Mazzoni (5-5, 4.76). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:20 pm.
