Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - Despite an early 3-0 lead, the Fort Wayne TinCaps could not hang on in Saturday night's game, falling, 4-3, to the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field. TinCaps pitcher Matt Wisler struck out a career-high nine batters over his five innings of work.
Fort Wayne (28-20, 59-59) started the scoring in the second inning with back-to-back doubles by Travis Whitmore and Duanel Jones. Jones' two-base hit scored Whitmore, giving the TinCaps a 1-0 lead. In the third, Mike Gallic hit a one-out triple and scored on a single by Yeison Asencio.
Dayton (20-26, 50-66) touched up Matt Wisler for two runs in the bottom of the third, getting a two-run, two-out single from Joe Terry, pulling to 3-2. Wisler allowed just four hits and walked one, while tallying his career-high in strikeouts.
Chris Fetter entered out of the Fort Wayne bullpen in the sixth, and allowed an unearned run to score. Terry led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Matt Colantonio. Terry scored two batters later on a Kyle Waldrop sacrifice fly, which tied the game at three. Fetter struck out the side in the seventh, and handed the ball off to Luis De La Cruz (4-5).
The right-hander allowed a one-out single to Jefry Sierra, walked Terry and hit Yorman Rodriguez with a pitch to load the bases. De La Cruz then surrendered an RBI single to Waldrop, which scored Sierra and gave Dayton the lead, 4-3.
Carlos Contreras retired the TinCaps in order in the ninth, as he picked up his 15th save. The Fort Wayne offense went quiet over the final 22 batters of the game. After Asencio's RBI single in the third, the TinCaps had only two base runners over the remainder of the game's six innings. Ryan Kemp (3-5) picked up the win out of Dayton's bullpen, working two scoreless innings.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 4:00 Sunday afternoon. The scheduled starters are Erik Carbrera for the TinCaps and Robert Stephenson for the Dragons.
