Castillo Crushes Game Winner

Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (24-20, 55-58) defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (22-22, 57-57) by a final of 7-5. In the bottom of the eighth inning, with two outs and one on base, Leonardo Castillo blasted his fourth homerun of the season and the Captains led the ballgame by a pair of runs. The homer proved to be the game winner.

South Bend scored first. Matt Helm singled in the second inning. Kerry Jenkins doubled home helm and the score was 1-0 South Bend. Jake Lowery hit his fifth homerun of the season, in the bottom half of the inning, off the batting cage in Right Field and the score was tied at 1-1.

Lake County scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mark Bradley walked, and Yhoxian Medina walked to put two runners on base and no one out for Lake County. Jose Ramirez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw from the catcher went up the right field line and both runners scored. Ramirez was heading to third base when the right fielder threw the ball into third base, and the throw was wild. The second error of the play allowed Ramirez to score and the score was 4-1 Lake County.

The Captains added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Leonardo Castillo singled and reached second on an error. Mark Bradley singled into left field scoring Castillo and the score was 5-1. In the top of the fifth inning, with two outs and two on, Ryan Court hit a homerun to right center field and the score was 5-4 Captains.

South Bend tied the ballgame in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Bryan Henry doubled and Niko Gallego tripled off the left field wall and the scoring was Henry. The game was tied at 5-5 heading to the seventh inning.

LHP Elvis Araujo (5-9) got the start for Lake County and did not get a decision. Elvis pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, five earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Francisco Valera (4-3) entered the game and pitched two innings of scoreless baseball to earn the win. Valera struck out one. Manny Carmona closed the door in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

LHP Andrew Barbosa (2-2) started the ballgame for the Silver Hawks. Barbosa did not factor into the decision. Barbosa pitched six innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, three were earned, he walked one and fanned seven. Alex Capaul (1-3) took the loss. Capaul pitched two innings, three hits, two earned runs, one strikeout and allowed the homer to Leonardo Castillo.

Lake County will continue welcom the Great Lakes Loons to Classic Park on Wednesday Night. RHP Gustavo Gomez (6-7, 5.92) will start for the Loons. Lake County will send RHP Cody Anderson (4-6, 3.29) to the mound. Game time is 7:00 PM

Wednesday will be the Captains Eating Olympics, Part Deux, which will have contestants battling against each other in an inning-by-inning eating contest of the most daring food and drink challenges possible. Both winners of the Captains Moby Dick Sandwich Challenge will be among the participants. Captains Eating Olympics, Part Un, was in 2010. Game time is 7 PM.
