Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Grant Green went 2-for-4, extending his team-season-leading hitting streak to 13 games, but the River Cats fell to the Nashville Sounds on Monday night at Raley Field, 5-3.
The River Cats took an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the second when Shane Peterson singled-home Michael Taylor and Grant Green. The Sounds then tied the game at two, scoring twice off of Cats starter Graham Godfrey-once on a solo home run and again on a sacrifice fly. Sacramento took the lead again with a Green plated Taylor with a single to left-center field in the sixth, but the Sounds regained the lead with a two-run seventh.
Trailing 4-3, the River Cats loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, but former River Cat Fautino De Los Santos got out of the jam, inducing a pop-up and two swinging strikeouts. The River Cats gave up one more run in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run from Sounds shortstop Jeff Bianchi, ultimately losing 5-3.
Green finished 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a double. Cliff Pennington, playing the third game of his MLB rehab assignment, went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and a strikeout, while Taylor went 0-for-1 with two runs and three walks.
Jim Miller suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs in two innings pitched. Godfrey went four innings, giving up two runs and five hits with two strikeouts in a no-decision. Sounds lefty Juan Perez earned the win.
The loss snaps the River Cats' six-game winning streak, but they maintain a 5.5-game division-lead over the Las Vegas 51s with 27 games remaining in the regular season.
Game three of the series begins at 7:05 on a Kids Eat Free Tuesday presented by California Family Fitness. River Cats righty Tyson Ross (4-2, 2.75 ERA) will face Sounds right-handed pitcher Tyler Thornburg (1-0, 1.80 ERA) at Raley Field.
