Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The River Bandits earned their second consecutive road win Monday night against Burlington, as the Quad Cities pitching staff held the Bees' offense to a mere three hits in a 3-1 win at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa.
Quad Cities (21-22 second half, 56-56 overall) benefitted from a dominant start from right-hander Sam Gaviglio (7-7), who threw six scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and two walks, and striking out eight. In his last three starts, Gaviglio has thrown nineteen innings and allowed just one unearned run on nine base hits.
An RBI groundout by second baseman Luis Mateo in the top of the second inning opened the scoring against Burlington starter Drew Granier (11-7). The right-hander allowed a one-out double to Juan Castillo and a single to Nick Martini before Mateo plated the River Bandits' catcher with the groundout, and gave Quad Cities a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh, when the River Bandits scored two more times. Granier issued a leadoff walk to left fielder Jordan Walton, and was then pulled in favor of right-hander Jose Macias. Granier finished with six innings pitched, and allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three. Nick Longmire then advanced Walton with a sacrifice bunt and Matt Williams lined out. With two outs, Stephen Piscotty and David Medina had back-to-back doubles to push the River Bandits lead to 3-0.
Dixon Llorens threw two perfect innings in relief of Gaviglio to earn his second hold of 2012. He struck out three of the eleven hitters set down on strikes by Quad Cities pitching.
Burlington (23-20, 55-57) scored their lone run against Quad Cities closer Heath Wyatt in the bottom of the ninth inning. The right-hander hit Sean Jamieson to lead off the inning before retiring the next two batters. Burlington right fielder Douglas Landaeta then doubled to center to score Rashun Dixon. Wyatt then retired Wade Kirkland to end the game and earn his 18th save of the season - which ranks second in the Midwest League.
Longmire, Piscotty and Castillo all notched two hits for Quad Cities in the win. Shortstop Matt Williams saw his ten-game hitting streak draw to a close with an 0-for-5 night.
Left-hander Hector Hernandez (7-5) is scheduled to start for the River Bandits in the finale Tuesday against right-hander A.J. Cole (5-3). First pitch from Community Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
