Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - Akron's Davis Stoneburner cracked a game-winning, RBI single to left field in the bottom of the 11th inning Wednesday night, handing the Aeros a thrilling, 7-6 win over the Erie SeaWolves at Canal Park.
The victory completed a three-game sweep of the SeaWolves. The Aeros (63-41) won for the ninth straight time at home, and maintained a 9 =C21/2 game lead over second-place Bowie, who comes to town on Thursday.
Stoneburner's single off Erie flamethrower Bruce Rondon (0-1) drove home Jordan Henry, who opened the 11th with a walk. Henry stole second and was balked to third by Rondon.
The SeaWolves (46-58) went deep into the playbook in the 11th, trying to keep the game tied. With Henry at third, Rondon walked Roberto Perez, who promptly took second on defensive indifference. Manager Chris Cron then brought rightfielder Nick Castellanos to the infield to serve as a fifth defender. He moved Michael Rockett from left to right field and conceded left field. With the crowded infield pulled in tight, Stoneburner rendered all points moot with a solid base hit to left on a 0-1 count. It was his 18th RBI of the season.
The heroics made a winner of righthander Toru Murata, who earned his first Double-A win with three shutout innings of relief. Murata (1-1) gave up one hit and struck out four.
The Aeros coughed up a 6-1 lead when Erie erupted for five runs in the fifth off starter Giovanni Soto to tie the game at 6-6. Aeros relievers combined for seven shutout innings after that.
Four Aeros pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 14 batters on the night.
Aside from Stoneburner, the consensus MVP of the game for the Aeros was righthander Rob Bryson, who entered the game in the seventh with Erie runners on the corners and the score tied at 6-6. Bryson responded with three straight strikeouts to end the threat, and then fanned two more in a perfect eighth. It was the second time this month that Bryson fanned three in a row to escape a jam. He also did it on July 14th, when he saved a game against Altoona.
The Aeros took a 6-1 lead through three innings, including a four-run rally in the third against starter James Avery, who recovered to last eight innings and earn a no-decision for the SeaWolves.
Already leading 2-0, the Aeros rallied in the third inning to take temporary command of the game. Matt Lawson clubbed his first home run of the season to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Henry later added a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1.
The Aeros will continue the homestand Thursday night at 7:05, when they welcome in the Bowie Baysox (Orioles) for the opener of a four-game series. LHP Jake Petit (7-2, 4.15) will get the start for the Baysox, while RHP Paolo Espino will take the ball for the Aeros. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
