Mississippi Braves News Release

Jacksonville, FL - Trailing 5-3 in the ninth and facing Jacksonville Suns star closer AJ Ramos, things looked bleak for the Mississippi Braves. But in the waning moments of tight games against some of the league's best closers, the Braves have shined this season.

Tonight was no different. Christian Bethancourt and Joey Terdoslavich each hit RBI singles to tie the game at five, and Donnie Webb dropped a two-out fly ball in left-center to score three runs and give the Braves an 8-5 victory.

It was just the third blown save and the first loss of the season for Ramos. It was also the third time a 2012 Southern League All-Star has blown a save against the M-Braves (10-17; 40-57) this season, joining Pensacola's Donnie Joseph on May 6th and Jackson's Carter Capps on July 6th. Combined the three have blown just six saves all year in the Southern League, and half have been against the Braves.

Suns starter Bryan Evans and Braves starter JR Graham dueled through a scoreless 4 1/2 innings. But in the bottom of the fifth Webb hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, to put the Suns (13-15; 46-52) ahead 2-0.

In the top of the seventh, the Braves stole away the lead for the first time. Tim Smith drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Todd Cunningham plated two with his fifth triple of the year, putting the Braves ahead 3-2.

Next half inning, though, Chasen Shreve got in some trouble. He walked Kyle Jensen to lead off the inning before Jeff Dominguez got a one-out single. Danny Pertusati then walked to load the bases for Webb again, who brought them all around to score with a double. That made it 5-3 Suns, setting up the fantastic finish.

Jason Christian and Cunningham led off the ninth with walks off of Ramos. Bethancourt drove in the first ninth-inning run on a single to right-center, putting runners at the corners for Terdoslavich's game-tying single on an 0-2 pitch. Alden Carrithers walked to load the bases, setting up Webb's folly in left-center.

Now the Braves try to pin together back-to-back wins against the Suns in Saturday's 5:05 PM CT game three. Right-hander Gary Moran puts his league third-best 3.15 ERA to the test. Listen live beginning at 4:30 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch" at 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
