Chiefs Drop Fifth Straight In Sunday Loss to Cougars

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs lost the opening game of a three game set against the Kane County Cougars Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 loss at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss puts the Chiefs second-half record at 3-7 and they are 38-41 on the season.

Kane County got on the board in the second inning with a two out rally. Starling Peralta retired the first two batters of the inning but he hit Julio Aparicio to put him on first. Murray Watts doubled to left which brought home Aparicio and the Cougars were up 1-0. Dean Espy hit a weak ground ball to second base and on the play, Zeke DeVoss threw wildly to first to bring home Watts to make the score 2-0.

The Chiefs cut into the lead in the third. Yaniel Cabezas walked to lead-off the inning and he advanced to second on a Jason Mitchell wild pitch. Oliver Zapata grounded a ball to first and got Cabezas to third. DeVoss singled on a fly ball to centerfield and the lead was cut in half. After DeVoss was caught stealing second, Taiwan Easterling singled and stole second and Dustin Geiger was hit by a pitch. The rally came to an end on a Paul Hoilman pop up and the score remained 2-1.

The Cougars got the run back quickly in the top of the fourth when Jorge Bonifacio hit a towering homer which went out of the stadium and landed on Jefferson Street. Peralta retired the side in order which kept the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Peoria clawed back starting with Javier Baez getting hit by a pitch. On another wild pitch by Mitchell, Baez was able to advance two bases going from first to third. Wes Darvill lifted a fly ball to left center and Baez tagged from third and the deficit again was only one with a score of 3-2.

The Cougars added insurance runs in the top of the ninth off reliever Larry Suarez. Daniel Mateo hit a soft fly ball to right for a double and advanced to third on a Bonifacio sacrifice bunt. Swinging on a 3-0 count, Antonio hit a fly ball into left center and an outstretched Easterling dove to make the catch and Mateo tagged from third making the score 4-2. Aparicio singled to left and stole second. Watts walked and with two outs and Espy lifted a ball over the wall in left for a three run homer and the Chiefs were down 7-2.

Peralta (1-3) took the loss Sunday despite going a strong eight innings and only allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out two. Suarez went one inning allowing four runs on three hits and one walk.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Starling Peralta (RHP) - Peralta went a season-high eight innings and had his second consecutive quality start. He struck out two and only allowed six base runners on the day.

Notes: The home run given up by Peralta puts him in 20th place on the Chiefs all-time list for home runs allowed with 14..Sunday's game was the second consecutive quality star for Peralta...The eight innings he threw was a season high...Eight innings pitched was the most by a Chiefs pitcher since Austin Kirk threw a complete game no-hitter July 4, 2011...Zapata extended his hitting streak to eight games...Yasiel Balaguert had his eight game hitting streak snapped...Suarez has allowed a run in four straight outings...In Suarez' 12 outings, he has only retired the first batter in three of those games...Four Chiefs were caught stealing bases which is a season-high...The last time Peoria was three games under .500 was June 8...The five game losing streak is a season-high for the Peoria...The Chiefs continue the series tomorrow with a game at 7:00...Monday night's game is half-price tickets...The Chiefs will send RH Jose Rosario (6-7, 4.22) to the mound and the Cougars will counter with RH Angel Baez (2-2, 3.03)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with a pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
