Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys roster received an unexpected change Saturday evening as the Keys intended starter Kyle Simon was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies organization in a deal that brought the Orioles the veteran slugger Jim Thome. The Keys turned to LHP Trent Howard on short notice and Howard worked five scoreless innings. Unfortunately the Dash rallied against the Keys pen and Frederick fell 8-2.
With the defeat the Keys finish a 4-3 road trip and stand at 5-5 on the year as they head home for a late-afternoon tilt with Wilmington Sunday at Harry Grove Stadium.
Frederick struggled offensively against all-star starter Matt Heidenreich as the Keys did not register a hit until the 6th inning. It was scoreless to the bottom of the sixth, but with a run already home and two outs, RF Cyle Hankerd hit a three-run home run to center field to put the Dash up 4-0.
SS Garabez Rosa hit a solo home run to left field, his third of the year to get the Keys on the board with two down in the seventh inning. Winston-Salem pushed home four more runs in the eighth inning to open the contest up.
The trade sends the Keys opening day starter and Orioles fourth round pick in 2011 to the Phillies along with 19-year old catcher Gabriel Lino who was playing with Class-A Delmarva. In return the Orioles will get Thome, who has hit more than 600 home runs. Thome, a former Carolina Leaguer with the Kinston Indians, played his final league game at Harry Grove Stadium in Game Five of the 1990 Mills Cup Championship Series. The Keys won the game 7-5 winning their first Mills Cup Title.
Frederick returns home Sunday, July 1st for Zoo Night featuring animals from the Catoctin Zoo. There will be a camel, parrots, baby alligators and a dove release amongst other things. RHP Scott Copeland gets the starting nod.
For tickets for the 4:00 p.m. first pitch, contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
