Salem, VA - Potomac pounded 19 hits against Red Sox pitching and cruised past Salem 13-4 to earn a series win on Saturday night at LewisGale Field. The Nationals used a six-run fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie, scoring the final nine runs of the game to take the rubber contest. Christian Vazquez' three-run homer was the only long ball of the game, but the Nationals' balanced offense continued to slam Sox pitching, recording 45 hits in the three-game series.
Adam Olbrychowski dealt five innings to defeat Salem for the first time in three starts against the Sox, earning the win to improve to 3-6 on the year. He allowed seven hits and three walks, but surrendered just four runs, and the Nationals bullpen dominated over the final four innings. Salem did not manage a hit and walked only once in the final four frames against the trio of relievers: Adam Carr, Neil Holland, and Rob Wort.
Potomac's early 3-0 lead was erased with one swing by Vazquez in the last of the second, his fourth bomb of the season. Both teams scored once in the third and the game was even at four heading to the fourth.
J.P. Ramirez drove the first pitch of the fourth inning to deep right-center for a double, connecting on the first of his three hits and commencing the Nationals' six-run rally. After Miguel Celestino struck out Randolph Oduber, five straight Nationals reached base with a slew of hits and walks. Adrian Sanchez doubled to drive in one, while Rick Hague singled to drive in two. By the end of the inning, Celestino and Ruben Flores had yielded a half-dozen tallies on five hits and two walks, surging the Nats to a 10-4 lead.
Salem loaded the bases with two outs in the last of the fourth, but came up empty. Brandon Jacobs singled to start the fifth, but a double play quelled any possible threat. And over the final four innings, Matty Johnson's two-out walk in the ninth represented Salem's only baserunner.
Jason Martinson and Stephen King joined Ramirez with three hits apiece, while four other Nationals contributed multiple hits. Jacobs and Vazquez each delivered two hits for the Sox, who were outhit 19-7 in the lopsided affair.
Throughout the final few innings of the game, the action on the field was overshadowed by a bevy of lightning bolts that repeatedly flashed in the distance. Mother Nature certainly left her stamp on the series, especially with Friday's action being called after seven innings to an extreme wind storm known as a 'derecho.' The official game-time temperature on Saturday night was 100 degrees.
Off to a slow start to the second half, the Salem Sox hope to rediscover the winning way on the road starting on Sunday. The Sox venture to Myrtle Beach to take on the Pelicans at 6:05, with Charle Rosario expected to start opposite Wilmer Font at TicketReturn.Com Field.
