THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats lost to the Wilmington Blue Rocks 3-0...RHP Chase Boruff and RHP Edwin Carl combined to shut out the 'Cats...LHP Dimasther Delgado took the loss after giving up three runs, one earned, over six and two-thirds innings...The Hillcats were limited to just three hits in their fourth straight loss...The 'Cats are now 4-5 in the second half and tied for third place in the Northern Division with the Blue Rocks...
VS WILMINGTON: Lynchburg is 4-5 against the Blue Rocks this season, 2-3 in Wilmington and 2-2 at home...Wilmington is now the only Northern team with a winning record against the 'Cats...Lynchburg has blanked the Blue Rocks twice this season, winning each game 1-0...Last night was the first time Wilmington returned the favor, winning 3-0...Lynchburg is hitting .262 as a team this season but just .218 as a unit against Wilmington...
GOT PLANS FOR THE FOURTH?: The Hillcats lost their fourth straight game last night...The last time they lost four consecutive contests, was when they lost a season-high eight in a row from May 29 - June 5...The 'Cats also dropped their last series 3-1 to the Pelicans...Their first series loss since getting swept in three games by the Potomac Nationals June 1-3...With last night's loss, they will lose consecutive series, as they try to avoid a sweep tonight...
FIRST STRIKE: Lynchburg fell behind for the sixth straight game last night and lost 3-0...They are 1-5 in that stretch...At 33-9, the 'Cats hold the best record in the circuit when they take the first lead...The Winston-Salem Dash (35-13) and Myrtle Beach Pelicans (31-12) have scored first more times this season...The Hillcats have struck first in 53 percent of their games this season...
LOOKING UP: The Hillcats are tied for third place heading into action today at 4-5 in the second half...This is the first time all year, that the Hillcats have been out of first place (without having a record of 0-0)...They started the first half 5-0 and never even shared the lead for first after every other Northern Division team lost on Opening Day...
ALL ROADS LEAD TO: OF David Rohm went 2-for-3 last night...His team as a whole only had three hits total in the game...For Rohm the two-hit effort raised his season clip 11 points, from .208 to .219...After hitting .279 through his first 11 games in April, Rohm hit the shelf for five and a half weeks (right foot)...Since returning, he is hitting just .188 in 29 games...He hadn't notched an extra-base hit in 13 games prior to this series in which he is now 3-for-7 with two doubles against the Blue Rocks...
WEAVING THROUGH TRAFFIC: UTIL Matt Weaver went 2-for-3 Thursday night with a double, a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored...He now has five doubles, two triples, and eight homers this season for a total of 15 extra base hits...That makes up 47 percent of his 32 total hits this season...He is 13-for-39 (.333) since June 10, raising his average from .200 to .248...His eight homers are tied with 3B Edward Salcedo and C Braeden Schlehuber for the most on the team, but he's hit his in only 129 at-bats...Salcedo has 272 at-bats, more than twice that of Weaver and Schlehuber has 163...
KEEP YOUR HEAD UP: 3B Edward Salcedo committed his 22nd error of the season last night...That is the most of any third baseman in the league...Wilmington's Cheslor Cuthbert is next at 16...Cuthbert turns 20 in November, and Salcedo will turn 21 a month from today...He has now committed an error in five of his last six games at third base...That coming after his longest stretch without a miscue, from June 4-16 (14 games on defense)...Salcedo began the move from shortstop to third base last season, and has only played third this year...He committed 47 errors between shortstop and third base last year (so he's actually still behind his 2011 pace)...
I CAN BE, CENTER FIELD: OF Mycal Jones went 0-for-3 with a hit by pitch last night ending his season-best hit streak at 10 games...It was his longest streak since hitting in 10 straight from June 10-20 in 2010 in his first 10 Carolina League games with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (2010 Braves affiliate)...He is batted .447 (17-for-38) during the streak with six doubles, three RBI, and five runs scored...One of the two runs was the walk-off winner in Friday night's 4-3 extra inning win over the Salem Red Sox...He scored on Matt Weaver's squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 11th...Jones has taken over center field duties yet again since Saturday when OF Matt Lipka left the game early...Jones is hitting .313 when playing center field this season as opposed to just .207 when playing left field...The 10-game streak has raised his batting average 43 points, from .231 to .274 heading into tonight...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Yordano Ventura was signed as a non-drafted free agent October 8, 2008 at just 17 years-old...Debuted with the DSL Royals in 2009...Went 0-1, with a 2.78 ERA in 10 appearances, five starts...Started 2010 with the DSL Royals...Posted a 2.31 ERA in three starts before moving up to the Surprise Royals in the Arizona League...Went 4-2, with 3.25 ERA in 14 appearances, six starts...Struck out 58 in 52.2 innings...Rated by Baseball America as having the best fastball in the Royals organization heading into 2011...Went 4-6, with 4.27 ERA in 19 starts in first taste of full-season ball with Kane County...Struck out 88 in 84.1 innings...Entered 2012 as the tenth-best prospect in the Royals system (up from the 13th spot a year before)...This season, he is 3-5 with a 3.04 ERA through 14 starts...Has struck out 85 batters this season, which is tied for second in the league, in just 68 innings...Leads Carolina League starters with an 11.25 SO/9IP ratio...He was named to the Mid-season Carolina League All-Star team this year, and he will also travel to Kansas City to play in the Futures Game next month...In one prior start against Lynchburg, he pitched six innings, gave up one run on two hits, walked two, hit two, and struck out seven to earn a win...
