Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
THE HEAT IS ON: On a hot, muggy Friday night at Frawley Stadium, hits were hard to come by. The Wilmington Blue Rocks got more of them and were rewarded with a second straight victory against the Lynchburg Hillcats.
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: The Blue Rocks are in the midst of facing only divisional foes over a stretch of 13 straight and 17 of 20. The Rocks are 17-34 against Southern squads and 16-12 against their brothers in the North. With last night's win over Lynchburg, the Blue Crew has a winning record against every other team in the North, but has lost more than it has won against all four teams in the South.
EXPLOSIVITY: In the first half, the Blue Rocks scored just 227 runs for a league-low 3.2 runs/game average. Despite playing two seven-inning games and being held to one run on Sunday, Wilmington has scored 48 runs over its first nine games of the second stanza for an average of 5.3 runs/game. The team that hit 31 home runs over the 70-game first half, the second-lowest total in the league, has bashed seven early in the second. The Blue Crew hit a league-worst .231 in the first half but owns a .260 contact clip so far this half.
TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: The shutout for the Blue Rocks was their seventh of the season and their first since June 4 against Carolina. Their last nine-inning blanking came on May 26 at Myrtle Beach. The June 4 game against Carolina at Frawley was a 2-0 contest that was called in the fifth inning by the umpires due to rain. June 2 featured a 1-0, seven-inning shutout of Frederick in Wilmington as part of a doubleheader.
THAT WAS EASY: The Blue Rocks played their shortest nine-inning game at home this season. Friday's game took a mere two hours and 11 minutes to play.
MY NAME IS CARL: Edwin Carl set a career-high mark with eight strikeouts over five innings of relief en route to his first Wilmington win. It is the highest strikeout total for a Blue Rocks reliever since Patrick Keating fanned eight Keys in Frederick on May 8, 2010. Carl's previous career-high was seven whiffs, set back on September 3, 2010 at home against Orem when he threw for Idaho Falls. Even though he led the Pioneer League in 2011 with 19.4 K/9 IP for Idaho Falls, he never struck out more than six in an outing in part because he never had an outing longer than two innings with the Chukars.
IF YOU AIN'T FIRST: Should Wilmington win tonight, with help out of town it could work its way into a share of first place in the North come tomorrow. Outside of starting each half this season at 0-0, the Blue Crew has not owned even a piece of the penthouse since June 29 of last year.
LET'S GET SERIESOUS: Last night's win clinched the Blue Rocks' first series win since taking two of three from Frederick at Frawley Stadium from June 2-3. A win tonight would make for the team's second series sweep of the season and first since taking three in a row from Potomac from May 21-23.
BROOM READY: The Blue Rocks have not swept Lynchburg in Delaware since taking a three-game set from July 27-29, 2009.
FIVE ALIVE: The Carolina League's worst offense was held to five hits or less for the 23rd time this season. Despite that dubious distinction, Wilmington got its fourth win in such circumstances (4-19).
