
Indians Promote Tice and Sturdevant to Aeros

AKRON, OH - The Cleveland Indians announced Friday that outfielder Jeremie Tice and righthanded pitcher Tyler Sturdevant have been promoted to the Akron Aeros from the Single-A Carolina Mudcats. Both Tice and Sturdevant are expected to be in uniform when the Aeros open a four-game road trip at Altoona today.
Tice, 25, was a Carolina League All-Star this season, hitting .282, with 12 home runs and 47 RBI in 52 games with the Mudcats. He was tied for the league lead in home runs and ranked second in slugging percentage at .580. Tice was primarily used as the Mudcats' designated hitter, but has also appeared in left field and first base.
A sixth round selection in the '08 draft out of the College of Charleston, Tice, will be making his initial appearance at the Double-A level.
Sturdevant, 26, returns to the Aeros after pitching in five games with the Mudcats, going 1-0 with no ERA in seven innngs of relief work. Slowed by a shoulder injury in spring training, Sturdevant did not make his 2012 debut until June 5th. Last season, Sturdevant worked his way through the minor league system, appearing at Single-A Kinston and Akron before finishing the year with two games at Triple-A Columbus. While with the Aeros last season, Sturdevant was 3-1, 3.30 ERA in 19 games.
The Indians drafted Sturdevant in the 27th round of the '09 draft out of New Mexico State University.
The Indians also announced Friday that they have released Akron outfielder Ben Copeland. Copeland, 28, spent most of the season with the Aeros, hitting .189 with one home run and 15 RBI's in 46 games. He led the Aeros with 12 stolen bases. Copeland also appeared in 10 games at Triple-A Columbus, hitting .242 with a pair of homers and three RBI's.
The Aeros roster now stands at 25 players.
The Aeros will play a four-game, wrap-around series this weekend at Altoona against the Curve (Pirates). The first-place Aeros are 7-1 against Altoona this season. The team will return to Canal Park to begin an eight-game homestand next Tuesday, June 26th. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
