Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

With his team desperate for a quality start, right-hander Stephen Fife delivered a gem, tossing 7.0 scoreless innings to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (32-27) to a 5-1 win over the Round Rock Express (27-32) Monday night at Dell Diamond. The win puts to rest a season-high four-game losing streak and a six-game skid at the hands of the Express.

Fife (5-4) was simply magnificent in winning his second straight game, authoring the 7.0 scoreless frames, allowing just four hits and a walk while fanning four. The right-hander didn't allow a Round Rock hit until the fourth and from the first to the fourth retired nine batters in a row. Combined with the 6.0 scoreless innings he fired in his previous start in New Orleans, Fife has not allowed a run in 13.0 consecutive frames.

Albuquerque wasted no time denting the scoreboard, plating a run in the second on an RBI single by Josh Bard before erupting for two more tallies in the third. The "˜Topes opened the frame by quickly loading the bases with no outs on a single by Matt Angle, a walk to Jerry Sands, and Josh Fields. That set up Jeff Baisley, who laced a single center, scoring Angle and Sands to extend the Isotopes lead to 3-0.

The "˜Topes tacked on some insurance in the sixth with some help from some shoddy Round Rock defense. Brian Cavazos-Galvez got the rally started with a one-out triple, and after a walk to Tyler Henson, Angle slapped a ground ball that was misplayed by Express second basemen Greg Miclat, allowing Cavazos-Galvez to score easily and make the score 4-0 Albuquerque.

Another defensive miscue helped the Isotopes pad the lead again in the ninth. Sands started the uprising with a one-out double and Fields followed with an infield single to third basemen Matt Kata. In his rush to toss out the runner, Kata's throw sailed wide of first base, allowing Sands to scamper home and increase the edge to 5-0.

Round Rock showed some life in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on a fielding error by first basemen Baisley, but reliever Wil Ledezma made sure that was the extent of the rally, striking out Luis Martinez to salt away the 5-1 win.

The "˜Topes will look for a series split on Tuesday night against the Express behind right-hander John Ely (4-4, 3.55), who will take the ball for Albuquerque against Round Rock righty Greg Reynolds (3-4, 4.67) in a 6:05 PM MT start from Dell Diamond.

After one more game in Texas and a much-deserved day off, the "˜Topes are back home this Thursday for a homestand that includes 50-Cent Hot Dog Night, a Skateboard deck giveaway, and fireworks. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com .
