Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Stephen Fife tossed seven shutout innings as the Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Round Rock Express 5-1 in Monday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (27-32) snapped a four-game winning streak, their longest of the season. The Isotopes (32-27) halted a four-game losing streak and a six-game skid at The Dell Diamond that dated back to last season. Round Rock leads the series two games to one.
Fife (5-4) surrendered only four singles, two of which were back-to-back, one-out singles in the seventh. That was the only inning in which he allowed multiple base-runners, and he retired the side in order in the second, third and sixth innings. Fife finished with four strikeouts and one walk.
Meanwhile, the Albuquerque bats provided four of their 11 hits with runners in scoring position. Josh Bard had a one-out RBI single in the second, and Jeff Baisley added a two-run single in the third. Brian Cavazos-Galves tripled with one out in the sixth and later scored on Greg Miclat's two-out fielding error. Jerry Sands doubled with one out in the ninth and scored on a Matt Kata throwing error.
Round Rock did not scratch the scoreboard until the ninth inning and that by way of an Albuquerque error. Ryan Spilborghs and Brad Nelson had consecutive one-out singles. Two batters later, Val Majewski reached on Baisley's two-out fielding error that allowed Spilborghs to score.
Starter Martin Perez (3-5) shouldered the loss for the Express. He yielded four runs - three earned - on eight hits and three walks over six innings with four strikeouts. Derek Hankins worked two scoreless innings with one strikeout, and Ben Snyder allowed an unearned run with one strikeout in one inning of work.
Ramon Troncoso followed Fife with one strikeout in a scoreless eighth, and Wilfredo Ledezma struck out the side around the two singles and the error in the ninth.
Spilborghs (3-for-4) and Nelson (2-for-4) accounted for all but two of Round Rock's hits. Mike Bianucci had a leadoff single in the fifth, and Greg Miclat doubled with one out in the eighth. Joey Butler was 0-for-3 with a walk. Matt Kata was 0-for-4, snapping a 10-game hitting streak.
Cavazos-Galves, Josh Fields and Matt Angle all had two hit-nights for the Isotopes. Sands scored twice.
Round Rock and Albuquerque conclude their four-game series Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Left-hander Zach Jackson (2-5, 4.92 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander John Ely (4-4, 3.55 ERA) is slated to go for the Isotopes.
