Iowa Cubs News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - For the second straight night, the last homer in a multi-homer game for Mike Hessman gave the Oklahoma City RedHawks (35-23) a one-run win over the Iowa Cubs Cubs (25-32) at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Tonight, Hessman hit his second home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the RedHawks to a 6-5 win. Hessman has five home runs in the last two games. The RedHawks have won seven straight games overall and 12 in a row at home. The Cubs have lost five straight games, matching their longest losing streak of the season.
The Cubs grabbed an early lead on an RBI single by Anthony Rizzo in the top of the first inning. The Cubs extended the lead to 2-0 on a solo home run by Ty Wright leading off in the fourth.
The RedHawks came back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jimmy Paredes and Hessman hit solo homers off Cubs' starter Chris Rusin. Angel Sanchez had the final of three straight singles to drive in Matt Downs with the last run.
The Cubs came back in the top of the sixth against RedHawks' starter Brian Bass. Wright led off with a double and went to third on a base hit by Blake Lalli. Matt Tolbert followed with bloop hit to left to drive in the tying run. Rusin stood in next and was squared to bunt, but took a high pitch and RedHawks' catcher Landon Powell threw behind Lalli at second base. Lalli was caught in a rundown, but ducked under the tag attempt by Scott Moore and scampered for third. Moore's throw back to third base sailed high and rolled into the third base dugout. Lalli was awarded home and Tolbert advanced to third. Rusin followed with an RBI single up the middle and the Cubs led 5-3.
The RedHawks came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Rusin walked Hessman and Downs to start the inning and the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Barnes and Sanchez followed with RBI singles to knock Rusin from the game.
Esmailin Caridad came in and got out of the jam in the sixth, but with one out in the top of the seventh, surrendered Hessman's second home run of the night. Hessman is the active career leader for minor league home runs, extending his total to 364 with two more tonight.
Mickey Storey (3-2) allowed four hits, but not runs, in the seventh and eighth innings and picked up the win for the RedHawks. Juan Abreu retired the Cubs in order in the ninth to earn his third save. Caridad (0-3) was charged with the loss. Mike MacDougal finished with a scoreless inning for the Cubs.
The Cubs and RedHawks wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. RH Frankie De La Cruz (1-1, 2.78) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against LH Wes Musick (1-1, 4.08) for the RedHawks. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
