Machado Walk-Off Single Seals Win

Bowie, Md. - Shortstop Manny Machado hit a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday night to seal a 6-5 Baysox (19-27) victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (22-25).

"I was just trying to get a good hit," Machado said. "I wasn't trying to do too much. I wasn't trying to hit it out of the park. It was just trying to get a good pitch to hit so we could win the game. We struggled at the end but we came back late. We swung the bats well and came out with the win."

The Baysox offense has struggled to string hits together this season, but tonight they turned things around with three hits in the fifth inning and three extra-base hits. They also got the hits when it counted as they came away with their first walk-off win of the season.

We showed a little life with the bats," said Manager Gary Kendall. "Some guys did it throughout the lineup. [Jonathan] Schoop came in for [Brian] Roberts and got three hits for us and made some plays out there. It's a good win. It's a win we needed, I can tell you that."

For the third game in a row, Richmond took the early lead in the top of the first inning against Bascom. Gary Brown hit a leadoff single to second base and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Brian Roberts. Brown advanced to third base on a Nick Liles ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Mayora to make the score 1-0.

The Baysox tied the game in the bottom of the second inning against Altoona starter Justin Fitzgerald. With two outs, third baseman Zelous Wheeler hit a home run to left field to tie the game 1-1.

Bowie took their first lead of the game with a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, catcher Allan de San Miguel singled to center field and moved to second base when second baseman Jonathan Schoop singled to right field. The Baysox recorded their third hit in a row when first baseman Buck Britton doubled to right field, scoring de San Miguel and moving Schoop to third base. Center fielder L.J. Hoes plated Schoop with a ground out that also moved Britton to third base. Left fielder Robbie Widlansky plated the third run of the inning when he reached on a fielding error by third baseman Daniel Mayora that gave Bowie a 4-1 lead.

Richmond got two runs back in the top of the sixth inning. Brown singled to center field and went to second base on a single to right field by Liles. With Mayora batting, Bascom was called for a balk that advanced both runners, allowing them to score when Mayora doubled to center field to make the score 4-3. Despite having a runner at third base with just one out, Bascom was able to retire consecutive batters, with help from a diving line drive out by Schoop, to get out of the inning.

The Baysox added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Richmond reliever Ari Ronick. Wheeler hit a one out single to right field and moved to second base when right fielder Steven Bumbry grounded out. Wheeler stole third base with de San Miguel batting and scored when Schoop singled to right field to extend the Baysox lead to 5-3.

The Flying Squirrels got the run right back in the top of the seventh inning against right-handed reliever Robert Hinton. With one out, Jose Flores singled to left field and Wendell Fairley followed with a single to left field that moved Flores to third base. Flores scored when Brown reached on a force out to make the score 5-4.

Richmond came back to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning against Baysox closer Greg Burke. Ryan Cavan hit a leadoff single to center field and was replaced on the basepath by Juan Perez. Perez stole second base with Ehire Adrianza batting and he moved to third base when Adrianza grounded out. Flores hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Perez and tie the score at 5-5.

Bowie had the final word as they scored in the top of the ninth against Richmond reliever Daryl Maday to earn the win. Schoop singled up the middle and was replaced on the basepath by Josh Barfield. Britton moved Barfield to second on a sacrifice bunt and Hoes moved him to third base with a sacrifice fly. Widlansky was then intentionally walked before Machado singled up the middle to score Barfield and give the Baysox a 6-5 win.

Bascom pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three batters in the no decision.

"After they got a quick run on us, I really had to focus hard to try and hold them and let my team put up some runs - which they did," Bascom said. "I didn't feel sharp tonight; my breaking balls were sharp early so I went with those. I have faced these guys a bunch of times before so I had a good idea of what they were going to do up there."

Hinton pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits. Burke pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out one in the win.

Richmond reliever Daryl Maday earned the loss. He pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on two hits.

The Baysox are home through Monday, May 28 for an eight game home stand. Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will be with the Baysox beginning Wednesday, May 23 for a Major League Rehab Appearance. Saturday, LHP Zach Britton will be making his season debut on a Major League rehab assignment.
