Curve Wrap Nice Homestand with 5-4 Win over 'Sens

CURVE, Pa. - The Curve made a five-run first inning stand up on Thursday afternoon as they defeated the Harrisburg Senators, 5-4, in front of 4,350 in the series finale at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Altoona starter Shairon Martis (3-0) notched his third win in as many starts as he earned the victory on Thursday with a quality start.

Altoona came to the plate in the bottom of the first down, 1-0, after spotting the Senators a run in the top half of the inning. The offense went right to work as Robbie Grossman walked and Brock Holt singled to place two on no one out. Jarek Cunningham put down a textbook sac bunt to move up the runners for cleanup hitter Matt Curry. Curry was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Tony Sanchez, who made Harrisburg pay with a single through the left side to tie the game at one.

Jeremy Farrell followed suit with an RBI single of his own to give Altoona the lead as he hit a ball deep in the hole at second that Jose Lozada was unable to make a play on. Miles Durham continued the trend and hit a sac fly towards center to bring Curry in from third to make it, 3-1. Quincy Latimore delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a two-run double to left that scored Sanchez and Farrell and placed the Curve comfortably in front, 5-1.

Martis kept the Senators quiet in the second and third before they scored two in the fourth to pull within two. Those two runs were the last that Martis allowed on Thursday afternoon as he finished six innings and allowed three runs with six strikeouts. The Willemstad, Curacao native turned it over to Duke Welker for the seventh and he only needed eight pitches to record three outs.

Jeff Inman, who was called up from High-A Bradenton earlier today, made his Double-A debut in the eighth and allowed one run. Vic Black was tasked with closing the game down in the ninth and got into a little trouble as he permitted one hit and walked a pair of batters to load the bases. Amidst the tough spot, Black bore down and recorded the final three outs to seal the win and secure a series split for the Curve.

Latimore finished the day 1-for-3 with his two RBI and put a nice ribbon on a solid homestand where he batted .368 (7-for-19) with three doubles, two homers and seven RBI in seven games played. Not to be outdone on the homestand was Holt, who was 2-for-4 on Thursday to run his numbers during the homestand to 11-for-27 (.407).

Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Curve (21-24) now travel back to Bowie to take on the Baysox for the first game a four-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. Friday night at Prince George's Stadium. Taking the hill for the Curve in the lid-lifter will be RHP Tim Alderson (3-1, 1.93), who is 2-0 since moving to the starting rotation. He'll be opposed by Baysox starter RHP Bobby Bundy (2-7, 5.26), who will be making his third start of the season against the Curve.
