'Wolves Drop Series Finale

The SeaWolves squandered a five-run lead on Thursday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park as they dropped the series finale against the Reading Phillies 8-6.

The Phillies struck in the top of the third inning against Erie starter Kelvin De La Cruz. Leandro Castro led off with a double and he moved to third on back-to-back one out walks drawn by Troy Hanzawa and Tyson Gillies. Castro scored on a Cesar Hernandez sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The SeaWolves tied the game in the bottom of the fourth against Reading starter Julio Rodriguez. With two outs, Jordan Lennerton walked and scored on a Rawley Bishop Double.

Erie took the lead in the last of the fifth. With one out, Tony Plagman was hit by a pitch and he moved into scoring position on a Corey Jones base hit. Jamie Johnson singled home Plagman making it 2-1. Brandon Douglas walked to load the bases and with tow outs, Lennerton singled home a pair making it 4-1. Erie capped a four-run inning with a Bishop base hit, scoring Douglas making it 5-1.

The 'Wolves added to the lead in the sixth. John Murrian led off with a double and he scored on a Jones knock for a 6-1 edge.

The wheels then came off in the top of the seventh. Reliever Mark Sorensen entered in relief of De La Cruz and allowed a leadoff, solo home run to Castro. With one out, Troy Hanzawa singled and was tripled home by Tyson Gillies making it 6-3. Gillies scored on a sacrifice fly and error by the left fielder Bishop with Cesar Hernandez batting. Darin Ruf singled home Hernandez making it a one-run game at 6-5. Erie went to the bullpen again and brought in Michael Morrison. Morrison allowed a two-run home run to Sebastian Valle, giving the Phillies a 7-6 lead.

Reading tacked on a run in the eighth and went on for the 8-6 win over Erie.

Morrison (1-1) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

De La Cruz got the no-decision, allowing a run on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings.
