Captains Score in Bunches, Win 10-4

Lake County Captains News Release


(Comstock Park, MI) - Nick Bartolone capped off a three run eighth inning by singling up the middle for a two RBIs. The Captains won the ballgame 10-4. In the eighth, The Captains hit three doubles one by Alex Monsalve, one by Alex Lavisky and the final one of the inning was a opposite field double by Robel Garcia. The score was six to three before Bartolone came to the plate. Bartolone had three RBI's on the day. The Captains added two runs in the ninth on two errors and that accounted for their ninth and tenth runs.

The Whitecaps scored first in the ballgame. In the second inning with two outs, Jason King singled to center field. King then stole second base for his first swipe of the season. Jason Krizan singled home King and the score was 1-0 West Michigan.

The fourth inning was a big inning for the Captains. Lake County scored four times on the power of four hits highlighted by a double by Jerrud Sabourin. Sabourin's double scored the third run of the inning and gave the Captains a two run lead. Sabourin scored himself on a Robel Garcia single and the score was 4-1 Captains.

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Dean Green led off with a single but was eliminated at second base by a fielders choice by Pat Leyland. Leyland scored on the Aaron Westlake homerun. Westlake now has five homeruns on the season and two in as many nights against the Captains. The two- run shot made it a 4-3 baseball game.

Lake County added a run in the top half of the sixth inning, Alex Monsalve walked to begin the inning, Sabourin singled him to second and Robel Garcia walked to load the bases. Nick Bartolone hit a slow chopper to the first baseman Aaron Westlake, the ball was hit to slow to throw home, so Monsalve scored and Bartolone was out at first base. The Captains led 5-3 heading into the seventh inning.

The Whitecaps added a run in the ninth when Jason King doubled and was singled home by Jason Krizan but, the rallied was halted by Cole Cook and the Captains won the game by six runs and a final of 10-4.

RHP Marcelo Carreno (0-4) was saddled with the loss for West Michigan. Carreno went six innings allowing seven hits, five runs, four hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Melvin Mercedes entered the ballgame in relief and pitched two innings allowing four hits and three earned runs. He gave way to Warwick Saupold in the ninth. Saupould was a victim of the two errors as he surrendered two un-earned runs.

LHP Elvis Araujo (2-4) got the win for Lake County. Araujo pitched five and two thirds innings allowing five hits three earned runs, three walks and Araujo struck out a pair. Elvis also surrendered a homerun to Westlake. Grant Sides entered the game for Lake County and pitched two and one third scoreless innings. Sides now has twirled 19.0 consecutive scoreless innings. Sides struck out four during his outing. Cole Cook entered in the ninth for Lake County and pitched one inning and gave up one run on two hits.

The Captains continue the series on Friday night at West Michigan. The Captains will be on the road for seven games three games vs. the Whitecaps and four games in Lansing to take on the Lugnuts. Friday, Lake County will start RHP Joe Colon (4-4, 2.92) and West Michigan will counter with RHP Tommy Collier (2-3, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM
