Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Michael Antonio turned in a couple defensive gems in the seventh before cracking a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth to lift the Kane County Cougars to a 4-3 win over the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Burlington (20-25) had a 3-2 lead in the seventh when the filled the bases with no outs. B.A. Vollmuth bounced a ball to third that Antonio backhanded and threw home to start a 5-2-3 double play. The next batter, Douglas Landaeta, ripped a ball down the third base line that Antonio dove to handle before getting up and firing a strike to first to keep the deficit at just one.
Danny Mateo singled to start the bottom of the eighth while Lane Adams doubled Mateo to third. Antonio followed with a ground-rule double that bounced over the fence in left-center, scoring Mateo and Adams to give the Cougars (24-22) their first advantage of the game.
Jason Mitchell (1-3) made the lead stick in the top of the ninth as he worked around a pair of baserunners, getting Vollmuth to foul out, ending the ballgame. Mitchell worked the final two innings behind Edwin Carl and Jonathan Dooley. Carl surrendered three runs in five innings including back-to-back home runs from Eliezer Mesa and Bobby Crocker in the second. Murray Watts drove in the first Cougars' run while Justin Trapp went deep in the third to knot the score at 2-2.
