Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
BELOIT, Wis. - The Kernels knocked out three home runs as all of the visitors runs were recorded via a home run in the Kernels 5-3 victory at Beloit on Wednesday night. Gary Mitchell hit two of the home runs while Andy Workman hit one home run.
The game was scoreless until the 3rd inning when Beloit plated two, taking a 2-0 lead. Wang Wei-Lin's 2-RBI double to right field scored both Jairo Rodriguez and Tyler Grimes, giving the Snappers the two run advantage.
The Kernels took a 3-2 lead on back to back home runs in the 4th inning. Andy Workman's 2-run home run to left field tied the game 2-2. Gary Mitchell followed with a solo home run to left center, giving the Kernels a 3-2 lead.
Gary Mitchell drove a 2-run home run to left center in the 6th inning, pushing the Kernels lead to 5-2. It was Mitchell's third home run in his last two games and his 2nd two home run game of the season.
Jairo Diaz (2-4) pitched a solid six innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three. Mike Johnson and Stephen Tromblee both pitched scoreless frames.
The Snappers made things interesting in the 9th inning against Kernels closer Ty Kelley. A.J. Pettersen singled up the middle to lead things off. He reached 2nd base on a throwing error by Kernels second baseman Kevin Moesquit while the hitter Jairo Rodriguez was safe at 1st base on a fielder's choice. Tyler Grimes was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Wang-Wei Lin's RBI sacrifice fly scored Pettersen and cut the Kernels lead to 5-3. With runners at the corners, Kelley induced a groundball to third base. Kaleb Cowart picked the ball on a hard, short hop to begin a slick 5-4-3 double play to end the game. Kelley picked up his 7th save of the season, allowing one unearned run on one hit.
Matt Summers (4-3) took the loss for Beloit in five innings of work. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out two and walking two. Left handers Ryan O'Rourke, Clinton Dempster, and Corey Williams combined for four scoreless innings in relief.
The Snappers had three base runners thrown out at home plate during the ballgame. In the 4th inning, with the Kernels leading 3-2, the Snappers had runners at 2nd and 3rd base. With the Kernels infield playing back, Adam Bryant initially did not break home on a ground ball to short while the runner at 2nd base, Drew Leachman, broke for 3rd base. Kernels shortstop Wendell Soto gunned home as Bryant broke late for the dish, and Bryant was out.
In the 5th inning, two Snappers were thrown out at home. With the Kernels infield playing in, Tyler Grimes was thrown out on a groundball to second baseman Kevin Moesquit. Later in the inning, Nate Roberts ran threw a stop sign by Beloit manager Nelson Prada at 3rd base. Eddie Rosario had doubled to left, but the relay that went Ryan Jones to Wendell Soto on to Abel Baker nailed Roberts at home to end the inning.
The Kernels take on the Snappers on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Pohlman Field. The team returns home on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. vs. Quad Cities.
