Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Danny Mateo knocked home three for the Kane County Cougars on Friday night to back a solid start from Edwin Carl in a 5-4 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Mateo put the Cougars (23-19) on top in the third inning when he slammed a triple to left-center field, scoring Justin Trapp. On the relay throw toward the infield from center fielder Chevy Clarke, the ball got away which allowed Mateo to score, giving the Cougars a 2-1 advantage.
Mateo singled Tim Ferugson to the dish in the fifth inning to put the Cougars up by two. In the seventh, Jin-Ho Shin picked up an RBI single and scored on a Mateo two-bagger. Edwin Carl made the 5-1 lead hold up through seven as he surrendered just five singles while striking out four. Cedar Rapids (18-23) picked up their lone tally off Carl in the first when Kevin Moesquit scored on a double play ball off the bat of Kaleb Cowart.
Kane County's bullpen protected the lead for the Carl but not without a little nail biting. Mike Giovenco coughed up a run in the eighth while Jonathan Dooley (S, 2) allowed two in the ninth. Run-scoring singles from Clarke and Moesquit pulled the Kernels within one while Cedar Rapids loaded the bases with two outs for Frazier Hall. Hall drove a pitch to deep center, but Lane Adams tracked it down to end the contest.
The Cougars stay on the road Saturday night when they battle the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from Fox Cities Stadium at 6:35. Right-hander Kellen Moen (2-1) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Chad Thompson (1-1). You can listen to the broadcast on AM 1280 WBIG and www.kccougars.com, beginning with Cougars on Deck at 6:20 p.m. The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Wednesday, May 23, when they play the Burlington Bees in the start of a three-game series at 6:00 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
