Peoria Chiefs News Release
Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs allowed six runs out of the bullpen and fell to the last-place Clinton LumberKings 8-2 Friday night in the rubber match of a three-game series. The loss drops the Chiefs to 19-23 on the season as they head west to take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels for a three-game series.
After the Chiefs bounced into a bases-loaded double play to end the first inning, Clinton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second against Jose Rosario. Mario Yepez and Jabari Blash connected on consecutive singles with one out before Mike Dowd put the hosts on top with a single to left.
The Chiefs tied the game in the fourth. Paul Hoilman reached on a fielders' choice and scored when Wes Darvill banged a double off the right-field wall. Darvill moved to third on a groundout by Ryan Cuneo but was left 90 feet away from home as Marco Hernandez struck out swinging.
Clinton took the lead for good in the fifth. With one down, Rosario struck out Brian Brito but the third strike bounced away from catcher Yaniel Cabezas and Brito was safe at first. Jamal Austin singled Brito to third and the LumberKings took a 2-1 lead on a second wild pitch from Rosario.
The LumberKings broke the game open against newcomer Hunter Cervenka in the seventh. With two down and a runner on first, Dan Paolini doubled to left for a 3-1 lead. Yepez drew a walk and Jabari Blash was called safe on a throw in the dirt to first base as Paolini scored. Dowd singled home his second run of the game and Blash scored for a 6-1 lead on a throwing error by Hoilman.
Clinton added two runs in the eighth against Austin Reed. Austin doubled home Dillon Hazlett and scored on a triple by Steve Baron for an 8-1 Clinton lead. The Chiefs got one back in the ninth when Ryan Cuneo delivered a bases loaded sacrifice fly off John Taylor for the final run of the game.
Rosario (3-4) struck out a career-high nine over 5 1/3 innings with two runs allowed on five hits and one walk. Cervenka, who was acquired by the Cubs Tuesday from Boston, allowed four runs, three earned over 1 2/3 innings. The lefty gave up four hits and walked two. Reed allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout in one inning.
