Hawks RHP Shields Earns Promotion

SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks, in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, announced Friday that right-hander Jeff Shields has been promoted to the Visalia Rawhide in the High-A California League.

So far this season with the Silver Hawks, Shields is 0-5 with a 4.05 earned run average in eight starts and a team-high 46.2 innings. Shields, 22, was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the seventh round of the 2010 MLB Draft and spent all of 2011 in South Bend where he went 9-13 with a 4.63 ERA.

Shields made 12 relief appearances in the Pioneer League during the 2010 season.

Silver Hawks catcher Tyson Van Winkle was promoted to Visalia on Wednesday after hitting .174 in six games for South Bend.

The Silver Hawks and Captains play the rubber match Friday at Coveleski Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:35 p.m. EST. J.R. Bradley (2-3, 5.17) gets the start for South Bend and will be opposed by left-hander Elvis Araujo (0-4, 2.54) .
