Trenton Thunder News Release
(Binghamton, NY) - Jefry Marte singled to deep right with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to score the game's lone run and give Binghamton a 1-0 walk-off victory over the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday at NYSEG Stadium. The loss spoiled a standout pitching performance by Trenton's Brett Marshall, who tossed seven two-hit innings.
Marshall allowed just two hits, walking one and striking out two. At one point he retired 13 consecutive Mets batters. Preston Claiborne (1-2) took the loss in relief for the Thunder.
With the top of the Mets order facing Claiborne in the bottom of the ninth of a scoreless game, a double by Matt den Dekker, a bunt single by Josh Rodriguez and a walk to Reese Havens set the stage for Marte's drive over the head of Abraham Almonte in right to give Binghamton the win.
Collin McHugh matched Marshall with seven shutout innings of his own. The Mets' right-hander allowed six hits, walked one and fanned six. Brad Holt (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first victory of the season.
Trenton and Mets play the rubber-match of the three-game series Thursday night with first pitch slated for 6:35 pm at NYSEG Stadium. Trenton right-hander Cory Arbiso (1-0) is expected to start against Mets' righty Zack Wheeler (2-2). The game can be heard on the radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online beginning at 6:20 pm.
