Sand Gnats Drop Shorebirds 7-1 in Opener

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (15-11) held the Delmarva Shorebirds (13-12) to just five hits in a 7-1 victory in game one on Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The Sand Gnats scored the first run in the second inning. Brian Harrison hit a one out double to left-center field. With two outs, Albert Cordero singled down the left field line to give the Sand Gnats a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Travis Taijeron hit a solo home run to left field to increase the lead to 2-0.

Savannah tacked on a run in the sixth. Aderlin Rodriguez doubled down the left field line. Two batters later, Cordero lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Sand Gnats a 3-0 lead.

The Shorebirds cracked the scoreboard in the seventh. Justin Dalles started in the inning with a single to right field. Later in the inning, Dalles scored on a groundout by Mychal Givens.

The Sand Gnats scored four runs on one hit in the seventh to build a 7-1 lead. Shorebirds reliever Jake Cowan walked four batters including two with the bases loaded.

Savannah starter Alex Panteliodis picked up his third win of the season over six shutout innings. He struck out a career best five batters.

Shorebirds starter Tim Berry took the loss over five innings. He allowed four hits and two runs.

Zach Fowler yielded just one hit and no runs over the final 1.2 innings.

The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats will play game two of the series on Thursday, May 3 at 7:05pm. RHP Parker Bridwell is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
