Savannah, GA - Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats won their third straight game with a 7-1 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (15-11) collected seven hits and drew seven walks.
Savannah scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, 1B Brian Harrison lined a ball into the left-center field gap, and hustled into second for a double. After DH Charley Thurber was hit by a pitch, C Albert Cordero singled into left field to chase home Harrison for a 1-0 Savannah lead.
The Gnats added a lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on Travis Taijeron's seventh home run of the year to go ahead 2-0. In the sixth inning, 3B Aderlin Rodriguez doubled down the left field line and scored on Cordero's sacrifice fly to put Savannah ahead 3-0.
Savannah starter Alex Panteliodis shutout Delmarva on two hits and two walks through six innings to earn his third win of the year and lower his ERA to 0.68 (2 ER/26.1 IP).
Delmarva (13-12) scored their only run in the top of the seventh against reliever Carlos Vazquez on an RBI groundout by SS Mychal Givens.
The Gnats added four runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach in an inning when the Shorebirds walked four and committed an error to allow a run to score. Cordero brought home a second run with a sacrifice fly. He finished 1-for-1 with a walk, two sacrifice flies and three RBI. 2B TJ Rivera singled to begin the frame to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games.
The Gnats send RHP Domingo Tapia (3-1, 0.68) to the mound in game two of the series Thursday against RHP Parker Bridwell (2-0, 4.05) for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and gates open at 6 pm. The pregame show on the radio broadcast, presented by Subway, on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com begins at 6:45.
