Isotopes Fall 14-10 to Chasers in 13-Inning Shootout

April 15, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The first extra-inning game of the season for the Albuquerque Isotopes (3-7) ended up having a heartbreaking result, as the Omaha Storm Chasers (8-2) first erased a late six-run deficit and then erupted for five runs in the game's final frame to claim a 14-10, 13-inning win Saturday night at Isotopes Park.

With the game knotted at 9-9 heading into the 13th frame, Omaha scored five times thanks to a three run homer by Terry Evans and a two run shot by Clint Robinson to seize a commanding 14-9. A subsequent RBI triple by Tim Federowicz in the bottom of the frame was little threat to the Chasers, who held on for the 13-inning triumph.

The reason the game went into extra frames at all was the result of Albuquerque methodically building a substantial lead only to see it all disappear in one inning. After falling behind in 1-0 in the second, the 'Topes gained a one-run advantage in the bottom of the frame after Luis Cruz rapped a two-run single to center field, making the score 2-1 after two innings.

Albuquerque extended its lead in the fourth inning beginning with a Trent Oeltjen double to left, who promptly scampered home on a single ripped to right field from Cruz. Elian Herrera followed with a rope to center field and was joined on the bases by Alex Catellanos and Jerry Sands, who both drew consecutive walks, the latter of which allowed Cruz to score and forced a pitching change for Omaha. Following the substitution on the mound, Jeff Baisley knocked a sacrifice fly to deep center while Herrera tagged-up from third to give the 'Topes a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

A rare occurrence took place in the sixth inning with Herrera on first, when the Chaser's pitcher Brandon Sisk balked to allow the runner to advance to second base. Later in the at-bat, Castellanos lined a double down the left-field line to score Herrera, and three batters later, crossed home plate on a single from Scott Van Slyke, making the score 7-1 Isotopes after six frames.

'Topes starting pitcher John Ely had a very impressive outing, allowing only one run on four hits through six innings of work, but ultimately saw his lead vanish after an explosive seventh inning for the Storm Chasers. Facing a six-run deficit, Clint Robinson poked a single to the hole in left-center field and was kept alive by a fielding error by Josh Fields on a grounder from Kevin Kouzmanoff. Lough and Ramirez both drew walks, scoring Robinson, and Kouzmanoff found his way to home plate on a second 'Topes fielding error, this time from Cruz. The inning dragged on for Albuquerque as the Chasers scored four more runs in the seventh, when Lough scored on a bases-loaded walk, Ramirez touched home after a wild pitch from Albuquerque reliever Ramon Tronocoso and both Falu and Clark scored on a double to left-center field from Derrick Robinson, leaving the game tied 7-7 after seven.

Omaha attempted to pull away late in the game when Kouzmanoff slapped a double down the left-field line and was driven in by a sacrifice fly from Ramirez, staking the visitors to an 8-7 lead after eight. In their next at-bat, the Chasers scored an additional run after Derrick Robinson walked and eventually scored on a Johnny Giavotella single to right-center, making the score 9-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Isotopes wouldn't surrender and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth after Federowicz scored on a fielding error by Clint Robinson and Fields knotted the game by scoring on a sacrifice fly from Cruz and sending the contest to extra-innings with the score tied 9-9.

In the end, Wil Ledezma (0-1) received the loss, while Chaser's pitcher, and former Isotope, Roman Colon (1-0) earned the win.

The two clubs have split the series so far, 1-1, and will continue play Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM at Isotopes Park. Right-handed pitcher, Mike Parisi, (0-0, 4.50) will get the ball for the 'Topes and face lefty Will Smith, (0-0, 8.59).

The Isotopes' opening homestand continues on Sunday with the first day game at Isotopes Park of the year. The "˜Topes will be honoring the Negro Leagues by wearing throwback jerseys, Albuquerque Public Safety Officers will be recognized, and schedule magnets will be given to the first 3,000 fans, courtesy of Dr. LoPour & Associates DDS.
