THREE'S A CHARM - Looking to get back on track, Wichita started out the week with a dominating performance against the Missouri Mavericks this past Tuesday. Adam Russo stopped all 20 shots he faced and earned his second shutout of the season as the Thunder blanked its border rival, 5-0. Five different players found the back of the net including Chris Chappell, who scored his first of the season. On Friday night, Wichita was short a defenseman as Andrew Martens was called up to the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL. Despite only playing with five defenseman and losing forward Alex Bourret in the first period due to an aggressor misconduct, Wichita was able to skate by the Texas Brahmas, 4-3. The next night on New Year's Eve, the Thunder won a high-scoring affair against the Evansville IceMen, 7-5, as Matt Summers scored three times and had an assist in the come-from-behind victory. Wichita trailed three separate times but managed to score three unanswered in the final period to end 2011 on a high note. Wichita is now on a three-game winning streak and continues to lead the Berry Conference by one point over Allen.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Matt Summers was selected as the Oakley CHL Player of the Week for his performance in Wichita's three wins. Summers finished the week with eight points and was a +7. He scored in all three games including a hat trick and an assist against Evansville on New Year's Eve. The Savage, MN native ended up scoring six goals and two assists while earning his second league honor. He was selected as the Player of the Month in October. Overall, Summers has 22 points (12g, 10a) and is riding a three-game goal scoring streak.
TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN- 12-year veteran Daniel Tetrault reached the summit for a Thunder defenseman. Tetrault (170) broke former Thunder defenseman Sean O'Reilly's record (169) this past Friday against Texas and now is the all-time leading scorer by a defenseman in franchise history. Tetrault assisted on Wichita's fourth goal scored by Matt Summers at the 6:37 mark of the third period. O'Reilly put up those numbers in 311 games from 1997-02, while Tetrault performed the feat in less time, playing in 265 games in a Thunder uniform.
HOME ICE ADVANTAGE- Through 17 home games, Wichita leads the league with 14 wins on home ice. Traditionally, Wichita has been strong in the Air Capital, going 346-233-58 all-time. Wichita is tied for the league-lead in wins (20) and is second in winning percentage (.707). Wichita has outscored its opponents 59 to 38 at home this season.
NEXT LEVEL- Andrew Martens had an adventurous week. He was named as a starter for the 2012 CHL All-Star Game this past Wednesday and an hour later, received a call-up from the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League. Despite missing the last two games, Martens (8g, 14a) remains in a first-place tie with Tulsa's Jeff Terminesi (5g, 17a) and Sean Erickson (7g, 15a) for scoring by a defenseman with 22 points. The Friendswood, TX native leads the league in plus/minus (+20) while teammate Jarred Mohr is in second (+17).
SECONDARY SCORING- The Thunder got a huge outing from Summers, RG Flath and Chris Chappell this past Saturday. The three combined for four goals and five helpers while going +11. Flath had one goal, two assists and was a +6, a CHL-best for plus/minus in a single game. Chappell added two assists while scoring in consecutive games earlier in the week.
THUNDERBOLTS... Wichita leads the league in goals scored (107), second in goals per game (3.69) and fourth in goals against per contest (2.90)... Wichita is first in shots allowed (26.90/game) and has given up a CHL-low 229 shots in the third period... Wichita is tied for third with six shorthanded goals... The Thunder power play away from home is ranked second, going 14-for-58 at a clip of 24.1%... Adam Russo is in third in GAA (2.44), tied for second in wins (14), tied for second in shutout wins (2), first in shootout wins (3) and third in minutes played (1157:16)... Aaron Davis is tied for first in game-winning goals (6)... Matt Summers is in first in shooting percentage (.400)... Erick Lizon leads the league in majors (10)... Davis is tied for third place in shots (130) and Beauregard is right behind him in fourth place (120)... In one-goal games, Wichita is 9-3-1... When leading after one, The Thunder is 8-3-0... Tied after two periods, Wichita is 7-2-1... When outshooting the opponent, Wichita is 12-3-0... The Thunder is 9-2-1 against teams from the Turner Conference while going 11-6-0 in division... Through 17 home games, Wichita sits in second overall in attendance, averaging 5,637.
UPCOMING WEEK- Wichita heads to Moline, Il for the second time this season to take on the Quad City Mallards Friday before returning home to face the Tulsa Oilers. Saturday is Sonic Thunderdog's Birthday party and the kids run the show. Thunderdog and all his wacky mascot friends will be in attendance and a special retro Thunder jersey will be worn by the team.
