Sharks See-Saw Past Whale 4-3

WORCESTER, MA - Brandon Mashinter scored with 2:56 remaining in the third period for the Sharks 4th and final lead of the game in a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Connecticut Whale in front of 5,091 at the DCU Center on Friday night.

Tony Lucia, John McCarthy, and Jack Combs also scored for the Sharks and Harri Sateri made 31 saves for his 7th win of the season as Worcester won their third straight game and improved their record to 10-2-0-1 in the month of December. The Sharks close out 2011 in Portland tomorrow at 5:30pm.

Tony Lucia (3rd) found a loose rebound on top of the blue paint and quickly backhanded the puck at 5:20 of the first period to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Brandon Mashinter and Marek Viedensky picked up the assists on the score with good work along the wall. Sena Acolatse (5th FM) fought the much bigger Andre Deveaux (3rd FM) at 18:00 after Deveaux hit Mike Connolly after the whistle. Sena handled himself very well landing several rights to get the crowd buzzing to end the period. The Sharks led 1-0 after 20 minutes while outshooting the Whale 13-10.

In the second period, Jonathan Audy-Marchessault (11th) tied the score at 1-1 with a terrific deflection from in between the face off circles in front of Harri Sateri at 5:02. Worcester took a 2-1 advantage with a beautiful breakaway strike by John McCarthy (8th) past Cam Talbot at 7:10. Connecticut tied the game again with a power play goal by Tim Erixon (2nd) from the left circle at 9:50. Brandon Mashinter (4th FM) and Jared Nightingale (4th FM) had a good scrap after a scrum at 19:54 as tempers boiled over at the end of a tied up second period.

The Sharks grabbed another lead at 8:49 as newcomer Jack Combs (4th) scored as a Sharks power play expired to give the Sharks a 3-2 edge. But the Whale tied the score again after Andreas Thuresson (8th) deflected a Tim Erixon shot from the point for the equalizer at 13:32. After some big saves by Harri Sateri, the Sharks would take one more lead for the eventual game winner. Tony Lucia and Ryan Del Monte worked the puck down low and found Brandon Mashinter (4th) alone in the left slot at 17:04. Mashinter ripped the puck past the blocker of Talbot for the game winner and to complete the Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

The Sharks record improves to 16-8-3-3 with 38 points through 30 games and 8-6-0-1 at home this season.
