Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Des Moines, Iowa - Cubs slugger Bryan LaHair belted four doubles with five RBI as the Oklahoma City RedHawks (60-71) and Iowa Cubs (61-70) combined for 15 doubles, two short of the 100-year-old Pacific Coast League record, in a 14-7 Cubs win before 6,100 Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park.
Cubs starter Alberto Cabrera (3-4) took the winning decision, giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six and one-thirds innings. RedHawks starter Andy Van Hekken (7-6) allowed seven runs on 11 hits in four innings in the loss.
Vernon (13) and Portland (4) combined for 17 doubles on October 8, 1911, still the Pacific Coast League record for doubles by two teams in a single game.
RedHawks infielder Anderson Hernandez extended a hitting streak to 21 games with a seventh inning RBI double, the longest streak for the RedHawks and fourth-longest in the PCL in 2011.
The Cubs opened the scoring against Van Hekken in the first inning. Lou Montanez led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Brad Snyder single for a 1-0 score. Iowa added another run in the second inning when Chris Robinson scored on a two-out double from Montanez for a 2-0 score.
Iowa extended the lead to 6-0 with a four-run third inning. Brad Snyder doubled and scored on a Bryan LaHair double for a 3-0 game. Marquez Smith later singled in LaHair for a 4-0 score. Chris Robinson later doubled in Smith and Ryan Flaherty for the 6-0 Cubs lead.
The RedHawks got on the board in the fourth inning when Chris Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a Collin Delome double and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 score.
The Cubs countered in the bottom of the fourth when LaHair doubled and scored on a D.J. LaMahieu double and opened a 7-1 Iowa lead.
Iowa continued the barrage against RedHawks reliever Ross Wolf in the fifth inning. The Cubs collected four runs with four hits and an error, including RBI singles from Gonzalez and Snyder and a two-run double from LaHair for an 11-1 score.
Oklahoma City scored four runs in the seventh inning, including a J.R. Towles two-run home run, Anderson Hernandez RBI double and Drew Locke groundout RBI for an 11-5 score.
The Cubs countered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run ground rule double from LaHair and a sacrifice fly from LeMahieu for a 14-5 score.
The RedHawks finished the scoring with an eighth inning sacrifice fly from Brett Wallace and a ninth inning RBI single for Collin Delome.
