Iowa Cubs News Release
Iowa tied a franchise record with 10 doubles and registered a season-high 14 runs en route to a 14-7 win over Oklahoma City Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. With the win, the I-Cubs earned a series split with the RedHawks, 2-2.
Lou Montanez got the offense going early in the first inning. Montanez doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Marwin Gonzalez before coming in to score the game's first run on an RBI-single from Brad Snyder. Montanez would double again in the second inning to drive in Chris Robinson and give Iowa a 2-0 lead.
A four-run third inning continued to push the game out of Oklahoma City's reach. Snyder and Bryan LaHair started the scoring barrage on back-to-back doubles with Snyder scoring on LaHair's knock. Marquez Smith followed with a one-out RBI-single, and Ryan Flaherty collected his own two-bagger to put runners on second and third. Robinson collected the team's fourth double of the inning with a two-run hit to put the I-Cubs up at 6-0.
LaHair notched his second of four doubles of the game in the fourth inning and came home to score on an RBI-double from DJ LeMahieu.
It was more of the same in the fifth inning. With two outs, Alberto Cabrera lined a single that deflected off of RedHawks' pitcher Ross Wolf. Montanez then reached on an error by shortstop Anderson Hernandez, his fifth error of this series. Gonzalez and Snyder hit consecutive run-scoring singles before LaHair hit his third double into the opposite field to score two more runs for Iowa.
With an 11-5 lead in the seventh, the Cubs tacked on three runs. LaHair came to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a ground-rule double to left field that scored two. LeMahieu notched his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly into right field that allowed Snyder to score from third to put the lead at 14-5.
LaHair finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and five RBI, which pushed his RBI total to 100 for the season. His four doubles in the game tied former I-Cub Jake Fox for the franchise record, and his 37 doubles this season ties him for fifth place with Brad Snyder on the single-season leader list. Snyder accumulated 37 doubles with Iowa last season.
Cabrera (3-4, 6.61) picked up the win, his second of the season as a starting pitcher and first since June 14 at Omaha. He pitched six and one-third innings, gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out six.
Andy Van Hekken (7-6, 3.51) took the loss and gave up a season-high seven runs. Van Hekken lasted four innings, gave up 11 hits, walked one and struck out three.
This series shifts to Oklahoma City for five games before Iowa returns for its final home stand of the season on August 29th. Wednesday night's game in Bricktown will see Cubs' LH Chris Rusin (3-2, 3.12) match up with RedHawks' LH Ryan Rowland-Smith (2-8, 5.75). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
