Greenville, SC - Following last night's game, in which the Drive (61-50, 23-18) and Legends (51-61, 16-26) combined for 21 runs on 26 hits, both offenses took a backseat to the boys on the mound at Fluor Field on Saturday night.
Greenville mustered just four hits, two of which were off the bat of David
Renfroe, in a 4-2 loss to Lexington.
Greenville starting pitcher, Keith Couch (5-4) took the tough luck loss in a game in which he didn't have his best stuff, but the Drive couldn't take advantage of an opportunity to tie the game in their final at bat. Couch pitched tossed 86 pitches over 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks.
The Drive got on the board first for the second straight night, with back to back hits in the second frame. First baseman Michael
Almanzar hit a single, and then he was brought home on a David
Renfroe triple.
Three innings later,
Renfore came up to the plate for the second time and hit another laser to center for a double, but unfortunately he was stranded there.
Lexington did all their damage in the third and fourth innings. They started off the third with a single by left fielder Bryce Lane. Lane was driven in by the other corner outfielder Emilio King, a two-run shot over the Green Monster.
The Legends scored the eventual game-winning run in the very next inning, after Ben Heath hit a double and scored on a single by the designated hitter, Tyler Burnett.
Three runs were all that the Lexington pitching staff needed to win the game. Starter Ruben
Alaniz (6-9) tossed 5.0 innings of three hit one run ball, before being relieved by
Murilo
Gouvea, who struck out 10 Drive batters while picking up his first save of the season.
The Drive bullpen was not to be outdone as the combined for three scoreless innings of relief. Tyler Lockwood was first out of the pen, throwing two innings while striking out three.
Jordan Flasher came on to pitch a perfect ninth giving the Drive a chance to win the game.
Greenville rallied in the final frame to pull within one run, but left the game tying run on second base. Christian Vazquez started the inning of by reaching base on an error by the Lexington shortstop. He then showcased his speed by going first to third on a single by Drew Headman. Vazquez then scored on a wild pitch and Headman advanced into scoring position where he would stay to end the night.
The Drive and Legends continue their series on Sunday with first pitch set for 4:05 PM.
Southpaw Manuel Rivera (5-4, 3.43 ERA) toes the rubber for Greenville, while Lexington counters with lefty Luis Cruz (3-2, 4.09 ERA).
