Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Collin McHugh struck out a season-high nine New Hampshire Fisher Cats and John Lujan came through with a four-out save to lead the Binghamton Mets to a 2-1 victory tonight at NYSEG Stadium.
After starting the game with a perfect first, McHugh was handed an early lead, when the B-Mets jumped on New Hampshire starter Chad Beck for three hits in the opening frame.
Jordany Valdespin started with a double to right, but was eliminated while trying to steal third base. Josh Satin followed with a walk and moved to third on Allan Dykstra's single to right. Dusty Ryan gave the B-Mets a 1-0 advantage with an RBI double that brought Satin home with the game's first run.
The lead did not last long. Travis d'Arnaud led off the second inning with a single back up the middle. The hit extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Moises Sierra quickly followed by shooting an RBI single to the right field cap that tied the game.
Binghamton took the lead for good in the third. Eric Campbell led off with a single and moved into scoring position with his fourth stolen base of the year. After Beck walked Valdespin, Dykstra ripped a single to right to plate Campbell with the go-ahead score.
Campbell's run proved to be the final tally for both teams. McHugh put up four straight scoreless innings to cap his night. The right-hander collected at least one strike out in each of his six innings and fanned the final two batters he faced.
Josh Stinson took over in the seventh and fell into trouble when he hit Jonathan Diaz and handed out two free passes. The righty escaped harm by inducing Anthony Gose to hit into an inning-ending double play. It was just the second time this year Gose has hit into a twin-killing.
Stinson returned for the eighth and gave up a lead-off single to Mike McDade. Calliz Crabbe entered as a pinch-runner and moved to third on a passed ball from Dusty Ryan.
With the tying run 90 feet away, John Lujan got the call out of the bullpen. The Texas native needed just one pitch to preserve the lead. Yan Gomes grounded out to third on the first offering he saw and ended the threat.
Lujan returned for the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to nail down his seventh save of the season. The righty struck out Adeiny Hechavarria to end the game and made a winner of McHugh for the second time this year. Beck was handed his third loss of the season.
The B-Mets (37-57) will look to take the rubber game of the series against the Fisher Cats tomorrow afternoon at 1:05pm. RHP Tobi Stoner (4-3, 5.73) will face RHP Zach Stewart (4-5, 4.52). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 12:50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
