Hoover, AL - Brandon Short collected his 11th homerun of the season as the Birmingham Barons (10-12, 50-42) eclipsed the Jacksonville Suns (8-13, 45-46), 7-1, in front of 5,655 fans, Friday night at Regions Park. There was a forty-three minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning due to rain showers in the area.

In the top of the first inning, Paul Gran smashed a double to left field, scurried to third base on a wild pitch and dashed home on a line-drive single by Luke Montz, 1-0.

The Barons retaliated in the bottom of the second inning when Jason Bour doubled and darted to third base on an Alden Carrithers groundout. Kyle Shelton's line-drive single drove Bour home and knotted the game at 1-1.

Justin Greene singled and sprinted home on a double by Tyler Kuhn in the bottom of the third inning. That was followed with a single by Jose Martinez that allowed Kuhn to reach third base. A sacrifice fly by Seth Loman plated Kuhn and gave the Barons a two-run lead, 3-1.

Birmingham continued their onslaught in the bottom of the fifth inning when Greene smacked a single to right field and proceeded to steal second base. After Kuhn was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base, back to back singles from Martinez and Short pushed Greene home. With the sacks packed, Loman reached on a fielder's choice which scored Kuhn and left the bases loaded. Carrithers's sacrifice fly carried Martinez home as Birmingham's advantage grew to five, 6-1.

The Barons tacked on one run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Short creamed a homer over the left-field wall, 7-1.

Reliever Brandon Kloess (2-0) earned the victory for the Barons with 1 hit, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 5.0 scoreless IP. Nevin Griffith garnered the no-decision after he yielded one earned run on 4 hits, 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3.0 IP.

Jose Alverez (0-2) received the loss for Jacksonville after he hurled 3.0 IP with three earned runs on six hits and one strikeout.

The Barons and Suns continue the series at Regions Park with game four of the six-game series Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Left-hander Charlie Leesman (7-2, 3.44) will take the mound for the Barons and Jacksonville counters with right-hander Omar Poveda (4-5, 4.69).
