JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - The Jackson Generals won a slugfest Thursday night at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC, defeating the Mudcats 10-7. The Generals pounded out 15 hits and have now scored 38 runs over the last five games. Generals starter James Paxton struck out 11 Mudcats Thursday night, the most by a Jackson starter this season. The Generals evened the series at 1-1. Paxton (1-0) tossed five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in his first Double-A win. Paxton struck out 11 and walked just one. Steve Delabar went 1.1 innings on the back end to earn his ninth save. Pedro Villarreal (3-2) took the loss for Carolina, giving up five runs in four innings. Brandon Haveman led the Generals by finishing 3-for-4 with a homerun and four RBI's. Brandon Bantz was 3-for-4, driving in two runs and scoring three.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Vinnie Catricala has hit safely in 11 of 14 games with the Generals, batting .368 (21x57) with 10 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs and 20 RBI. During this stretch since June 30, he has recorded 7 multi-hit games, including a season-high 4 hits on July 5 at Mississippi. Brandon Haveman recorded his 5th straight multi-hit game. During this streak he is batting .550 (11x20) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homerun and 6 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Erasmo Ramirez makes his team leading 17th start of the season tonight against Carolina. Ramirez is the only Generals starting pitcher to be in the rotation from the beginning of the season to now. Erasmo is looking to stop a string of four straight losses and he has not won since June 4th. Ramirez was named to the Southern League North All-Star team.
ALUMNI REPORT: The Mariners have had 8 current or former Jackson players make their Major League debut this season (Dustin Ackley, Blake Beavan, Josh Lueke, Michael Pineda, Carlos Peguero, Kyle Seager, Mike Wilson, Tom Wilhelmsen) and have played 11 rookies. The Mariners 25-man roster has an average age of 28.83, the 7th-lowest in the Major Leagues and 4th-lowest in the American League
FINAL TRIP TO ZEBULON: This is the Mudcats' final year as the Double-A affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds before the franchise moves to Pensacola, FL, and is replaced at Five County Stadium by the Class A Carolina League club currently playing its final season as the Kinston Indians. This is the 21st year of Double-A baseball in Zebulon, NC
IRON BANTZ: Brandon Bantz has made 15 of the last 16 starts for Jackson behind the plate, including back-to-back day games on Sunday and Monday. Bantz has recorded 4 multi-hit games during that stretch and is the only active catcher on the roster.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1999 - After 22 1/2 years in the dreary Kingdome, Seattle finally played a home game outdoors, moving into a $517.6 million ballpark with a retractable roof. Jose Mesa wasted a ninth-inning lead by walking four batters and the Mariners lost 3-2 to the San Diego Padres in Safeco Field's opener. 1980 - Johnny Bench broke Yogi Berra's record for home runs by a catcher as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Montreal Expos 12-7. Bench hit his 314th homer as a catcher off David Palmer. Bench had thirty-three home runs while playing other positions.
