Jackson beats Carolina

Zebulon, NC --- The Jackson Generals delivered a knock-out punch in the first inning, scoring seven runs on nine hits before Carolina came to the plate, and the Generals held on for a 9-6 victory over the Mudcats before 6,869 fans at Five County Stadium on Friday night.

Matt Klinker (L, 5-6) faced 12 batters in the first inning, with nine of the first 10 hitting safely. Rich Poythress tripled in two runs after an RBI-double by Joe Dunigan. When the smoke cleared, the Generals led 7-0.

Trailing 8-0 after two innings, the Mudcats (10-11) began to rally in the seventh against starter Erasmo Ramirez (W, 7-6). Quintin Berry's infield single scored a run, followed by a two-run single by Denis Phipps to draw Carolina to within 8-4.

Down 9-4 in the ninth, Berry jacked his third homer in six games, a two-run shot against Edward Paredes to pull Carolina within 9-6, however Paredes retired the next two hitters to end the game.

For the second straight night, the Generals amassed 15 hits, including three from Johermyn Chavez, who also homered in the second inning against Klinker.

Ramirez worked 6 1/3 innings for the win, while Klinker lasted 4 1/3 allowing 11 hits and eight runs in the defeat. Clayton Shunick returned from High-A to pitch 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

The Generals lead the series 2-1 with three remaining. Brandon Hynick (1-1, 4.00) starts against Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4, 5.36) on Saturday at 6:15 PM ET.
