Florence Y'alls News Release
Frontier League All-Star Chris Curley had three hits and two RBI and fellow All-Star Cole Miles homered as the Freedom hung on for a 6-5 win over Gateway on Friday night. Florence is now an even 24-24 at the midway point of the Frontier League season.
The Freedom jumped on top in the first inning against Gateway starter Brad Stone. Miles singled, Juan Valdes walked and Curley singled to load the bases. With nobody out, Drew Rundle hit a two-run single to right to give the Freedom a 2-0 lead.
Joe Agreste hit a solo homer to lead off the second against Freedom starter Anthony Bello to cut the lead to 2-1. The Grizzlies then put runners on first and second with nobody out, but a 5-4-3 double play killed the rally. The Freedom defense would turn the same double play in the next two innings to help Bello escape jams.
Miles answered back for the Freedom in the top of the third as he hit a leadoff homer to left, his second homer of the season to make it 3-1. The clubs exchanged scoreless innings until the seventh. Kevin Haas and Junior Arrojo hit back-to-back singles with one out and Miles walked to load the bases. Valdes hit a sac fly to center to score Haas and Curley followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 6-1.
Gateway came back in the bottom of the frame against Freedom reliever Zeb Engle. Brandon Peters and Landon Hernandez walked and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Brian Harris hit a sac fly and Kent Gerst blasted a two-run homer to trim the lead back to two at 6-4. Braden Tullis came on to get the final out of the inning.
Chad Robinson threw a perfect eighth before Corey Martin came on for the ninth. Chris Sedon singled with one out and Gerst hit a deep fly to left that appeared it may tie the ballgame. It just missed a home run, hitting off the wall for an RBI triple and placing the tying run at third. However, DJ Fitzgerald grounded out to end the game as Martin picked up his ninth save.
Bello (2-3) held the Grizzlies to a run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings for the win. Stone (0-4) took the loss after allowing three runs in six frames.
The series continues on Saturday night at 8:05 ET. Andy Clark (6-1, 4.81) will start for Florence.
