Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI- Traverse City Beach Bums starting pitcher David Deminsky continued his dominance in throwing over six solid innings as they beat the Windy City Thunderbolts in front of 4,911 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 4-2.
The victory propels the Beach Bums into a second-place tie with Windy City as each team holds a 26-23 record after the contest. This is the best record the Beach Bums have had this season.
The Beach Bums struck first in the opening inning when left fielder J.T. Hall launched a solo home run to right field giving the Beach Bums a 1-0 lead. The home run put Hall in front of Steven Alexander of the Normal Cornbelters for the Frontier League lead. Hall hit eight home runs all of last season, and has already doubled his 2010 total in just 49 games. In the fourth inning, Beach Bums right fielder Matt Brown drove in two more runs with a double to right field, scoring catcher John Parham and center fielder Zack Pace and gave Traverse City a 3-0 lead.
While the Beach Bums built their lead, Deminsky helped make it stand, pitching his first six innings without allowing a run. The left hander ran into some trouble when he put a pair of runners on base in the seventh inning, prompting the Beach Bums to turn to their bullpen. After an RBI-single from Windy City catcher Lee Rubin and a sacrifice fly from left fielder Quentin Luquette, Beach Bums reliever Scott Reid pitched out of further trouble to keep the Beach Bums holding a 3-2 lead. In his first three starts, Deminsky has not allowed more than three runs in any start.
An inning later, Hall came to the plate with two outs and first baseman Chase Burch in scoring position. Hall hit a groundball towards second baseman Michael Torres, who was unable to make the play allowing Hall an infield RBI-single to give the Beach Bums the insurance run they needed and a 4-2 lead.
Deminsky (2-1) was credited with his second win of 2011 for pitching 6.1 innings of two-run baseball, while Thunderbolts starting pitcher Matt Jernstad (3-6) came up the tough-luck losing pitcher after pitching 7.2 innings and allowing all four Beach Bums runs in suffering his sixth loss of the season. Beach Bums reliever Scott Mueller finished the game with a perfect ninth inning to pick up his twelfth save of 2011. Hall and Brown each drove in two runs to lead the Beach Bums in the contest.
The Beach Bums-Thunderbolts series continues on Celebrity Saturday night as the Beach Bums honor the American Red Cross in game two of this three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Right hander Matt Smith gets the start for the Beach Bums. He'll be opposed by Windy City righty Dustin Williams.
