Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - The Evansville Otters opened the second half of the season with a two-run win on Friday night against the Normal CornBelters.
Pitcher Scott Kelley allowed just two hits in the win as Evansville has now won 3 of their last 4 games.
In a pitcher's duel of a ballgame at Bosse Field, Evansville scored the first run on a squeeze bunt from shortstop Greg Fontenot. Down 1-0, Normal then tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth as the score was once again even.
The Otters hopped back ahead on an RBI single from newcomer Phillip Burton in the fifth. The designated hitter signed yesterday scored catcher Billy Killian and nearly another run before infielder Joe Spiers was tagged out at the plate.
First baseman Mike Durant then doubled up the lead on a solo home run to left field that just landed underneath the scoreboard.
Losing 3-1, Normal would come back with a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from shortstop Tyler Keeble that cut the lead down to one. Reliever Patrick Crider then entered the game and held on to the 3-2 lead as he induced outfielder Alvaro Ramirez to ground out. Evansville's Greg Alexander produced an insurance run RBI single in the 8th and closer Eric Massingham held on for the four out save in the 4-2 win over the Normal CornBelters.
The Evansville Otters improve to 15-34 this season as Normal drops to 25-24.
Scott Kelley (3-4) earns the win after allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Brett Lester (4-4), the Normal CornBelters starter, takes the loss, yielding three runs in seven innings. Eric Massingham also secured his ninth save of the season.
Normal and Evansville will meet again on Saturday night in the middle game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT at Historic Bosse Field on Vincennes Night at the Ballpark. Right-hander Jeremy Thorne (2-6, 5.69 Earned Run Average) will start for the Otters as he will be opposed by fellow righty Ryan Sheldon (5-4, 2.95 ERA).
