Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania- Reynaldo Rodriguez and Jorge Padron each smacked a home run as the Portland Sea Dogs edged the Erie SeaWolves 5-4 on Tuesday night. The SeaWolves collected 15 hits, but went 1-of-9 with runners in scoring position as the Sea Dogs pitchers danced around a number of jams. The last one came in the last at-bat for Erie when Portland finished off the game with a strikeout-throw out double play. Blake Maxwell got a swing and miss from Rawley Bishop and Tim Federowicz threw out Francisco Martinez attempting to steal second base to clinch the victory.
Erie jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Portland starter Stephen Fife (7-3). Audy Ciriaco tripled down the right field line with one out, then scored on a groundout by Michael Bertram. Then, Michael Rockett singled and Adam Calderone hit a scorcher down the left field line. Chih-Hsien Chiang mistakenly thought the ball went out of play and Calderone came all the way around for an inside the park home run.
The Sea Dogs tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Chiang reached on a leadoff walk and Federowicz singled. Then, Rodriguez blasted a three-run home run to left field, his first Double-A hit, to tie the game.
Jorge Padron gave Portland the lead in the seventh inning when his two-out fly ball found its way over the right field wall. Initially, it appeared that Padron's ball was going to be harmlessly caught to end the inning. Instead, it just barely cleared the fence to the surprise of pretty much everyone, especially Erie reliever Rob Waite (2-2). The two-run homer turned out to be the deciding hit.
The SeaWolves tacked on an RBI single from Martinez in the bottom half of the seventh inning to bring it back to a one-run game. However, the relief combination of Miguel Gonzalez and Maxwell worked around five hits over the final three innings to snap the team's four game losing streak. Portland has now won six straight on the road. Fife's victory ties him with Harrisburg's Brad Peacock for the most in the Eastern League.
The Sea Dogs continue their series against the SeaWolves tomorrow night. The six-game road trip brings Portland to Akron for a three-game series with the Aeros starting Friday night. The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field for a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder starting Tuesday, June 21st. That night will be Jimmy Buffett night. This weekend, the Sea Dogs will have their 4th annual Father's Day 5K Road Race, starting at 9:15 AM on Sunday. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
